Petersburg Farmers Market ev- ery Saturday morning until Sept. 28 on 8th St., next to the Court- house in Petersburg. There were no post- cards in the mailbox. Winslow Patoka River hasn't changed. It's still low, but should be ok for all the kayak floaters on Saturday at the Winslow Festival that I will talk about in next week's col- umn. It should be full of great fun. Anyway, Winslow hasn't had any rain either and with the hot temps and muggy humidity, the air con- ditioner is getting a good workout to keep us cool. The weather hasn't had any effect on the humming- birds, because we have seen two of them playing or chasing one anoth- er more in the past week than the whole summer months. The squir- rel is still seen climbing the walnut tree. This has been a hot week for the cat and dog. On Sept. 14, we went to the Hol- land Festival and while we were there, we stopped at a table that was selling Holland items. Did you know Holland was celebrating 160 years? So, we bought two tack pins. As we were walking up to the area, we saw a group congregat- ed, so I was interested to see what the attraction was. We saw several youngsters on pedal tractors ped- dling down a hill to get to the fin- ish line with their weight and there were a few who got close, but I don't know who won. They all had fun. I even loved to cheer them on. We hadn't had breakfast or brunch, so I got me a strawberry buttercream donut and it was big and square, and most delicious. Then as we started to leave, Norm stopped and got a bowl of homemade chick- en and dumplings that he loved. I couldn't resist buying two Hallow- een items, a rooster with dangling legs and a black two-story house with five windows, with decoration of a cat, "boo to you," pumpkin, "be- ware," "eek," and it lights up with a tealight. There were inflatables for the kids and the parents were right there to see them have fun. There was an announcement for an ice cream eating contest, but I was at the bottom of a hill and couldn't get there in time. There were sev- eral games and many food stands. The Medieval Rosenvolk players were there and a woodcarver. We got there early and when we left, more stars were coming in to en- joy the day. Wednesday was the day to set up the stages at Riverside Park and on Center St. It's an experi- ence to figure out how to work a puzzle and you have no picture to show you where each piece goes. However, the stages are up and ready for use. The Lions had five to six to help set up one stage and the Beau- tification committee had five to help set up the oth- er one. Thanks to every- one, you did a great job. The FCC is changing channels again, I guess to make it easier. However, when you don't have cable that scans au- tomatically, then you have to scan your T V, if you have antenna chan- nels like us. So, we asked Laura if she knew how to scan for the chan- nels and she did. So, she showed us what to do and now we have only two channels, but the channel that is supposed to change hasn't done it. It's still channel 21, not 31, and the second channel we get some- times is 44. We may have to wait until winter, so we might get more channels if the wind blows the right way. Last Thursday, after shopping, we topped the hill south of town and saw some smoke in town. So, we drove through Main St. and no- ticed the smoke was coming from the brush pile in th area north of the sports field and several trucks were there to put it out. I don't know how it started as of yet. So, we left and went home, where the grocer- ies were put away. The washing ma- chine Norm bought me was set up and a load of clothes was washed. It's really nice to have a washer again and I thank Norm for this item we needed. We would also like to say to Vernon, thanks a lot for the use of yours. We really ap- preciate it. The Pike County Tractor Drive, in conjunction with the Winslow Community Festival, is on Sept. 28 and will leave Hill's Auction at 10 a.m. and travel through some towns like Otwell, White Oak Lake and Cato, with lunch at Algiers. Then it's back on the road through Highbanks and Iva, then back to Hill's Auction. There will be about 31.6 miles of backroads to travel. See you there to see some of Pike County you either know about or, like me, have never been in some of these areas. It's like a history view of Pike County when it was a boom- ing town. It's always nice to see old friends and that is what I have done this week. Hopefully, a few more of my friends of the past 14 years went to the Winslow Festival this past weekend. In next week's column, set down with your cup of coffee or something to quench your thirst, because it should be a lot of reading to hear all about the day and night of pure fun for everyone to enjoy. More and more stars have stopped Norm to say they will light up something in the parade. I hope it's long and enjoy- able for all. As the light begin to dim on this week, I hope you all keep an eye on family and friends, slow down and see what your area has in store for you. Stop for school bus- es. Then, always smile, wave and say hi to every- one you see this week. Be kind to others.
