NEW 2019 SILVERADO 2500 OFF MSRP UP TO NEW 2019 TAHOE OFF MSRP OFF MSRP By Andy Heuring The White River is still three feet above flood stage at Peters- burg, but crews have already started repairing River Road. It runs parallel to the White River on the Pike County side of the riv- er, from Highway 57 to about five miles west, through the river com- munity known as Dodge City. The White River crested on Val- entine's Day at 25.6, which is the 16th all-time highest crest for the White River at Petersburg, accord- ing to the National Weather Ser- vice. Highway 257, at the Pike-Da- viess line, finally opened on Sat- urday after being closed for near- ly two weeks. The White River is projected to fall below flood stage of 16 feet fi- nally on Friday, March 1. The Pike County Highway De- partment made their way down to River Road on Friday, February 22, when the river was still at about 20 feet. Assistant Superintendent Josh Byrd said River Road is always damaged by flooding, but it was in better condition than he thought it would be. Byrd said because the crest was so high, they feared it might really be bad. "It is about like it always is," said Byrd. Dodge City residents are often faced with making the decision whether to stay and ride out the flooding or get out before the road closes. Rod Burkhart has lived at the edge of Dodge City for about sev- en years. "I have always stayed here through the floods," said Bur- khart. He lives in the former Tray- lor School house that was built in 1897. "As I understand it, it has never flooded," said Burkhart. He said prior to being known as Dodge City, the area was known as the Traylor Community. He said water has never gotten into his house. But it does com- pletely surround his house. "I have to put some sandbags around by the back door." He said a cou- ple of inches of water gets into his garage. "It's not really a problem. I keep things up off the floor and it cleans out pretty easy with a pow- er washer," said Burkhart. While the river doesn't' get into his house, it does cover the road and make it impassible. "I have a boat. I can get out if I have to in an emergency. Thank goodness we haven't had an emergency." He said he keeps up on the river predictions, so when a flood is pre- dicted, he stocks up on supplies. This year, he went 12 days with- out being able to get out. Burkhart said water starts com- ing over River Road near Dodge City at about 20.5 feet. This time, it was about five feet above the road at its crest. "There is about a 100 -yard sec- tion of the road that is like a water- fall. The water just roars like a wa- terfall. It is pretty noisy." Burkhart said he finally got out and made it to town by driving out and around some of the worst washouts in the road with his Jeep. "It was pretty hairy," said Bur- khart of making his first trip out of the bottoms. The Highway Department showed up early Friday morning and started repairing the road so it was passable to most vehicles by the end of the day.
