Spirit of Evansville Chorus performs at Pike/Gibson Retired Teachers Christmas party The Pike/Gibson Retired Teachers Association celebrated Christmas on Thursday at the Village Inn, with a buffet luncheon and entertainment by the Spirit of Evansville Chorus, under the direction of Dr. Evans, of the University of Evansville. The next meeting will be Thursday, April 11, 2019. Several re- tired teachers are members of the chorus, which practices on Mondays at Aldersgate Methodist Church. These ladies all participate in the Sweet Adelines. Winslow Coat Wrap is Dec. 22 The Winslow Coat Wrap will be on Saturday, Dec. 22. The event is collecting winter coats, new or lightly used. They will be put out or wrapped around signs in Winslow for whoever needs them. Anyone need- ing a coat can look around Winslow for them. Winslow Councilman-elect Debra Lamb said a person who wishes to remain unnamed has already purchased and collected several, but more are needed. Anyone wishing to donate coats can do so at the Corner Book Shoppe lo- cated at Main and Lafayette streets across from the Post Office from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday. Hours changes coming to some solid waste sites By Andy Heuring Pike County Commis- sioners voted to change trash collection hours and approved a road relocation during their Monday night meeting. Commissioner Assistant Kristi Dischinger told com- missioners the Solid Waste Management District Board had recommended sever- al changes to the collection site hours. Their recommendations were to reduce Bowman from Monday and Saturday to Saturday only; Coe from Monday, Thursday and Sat- urday to Saturday only; Sten- dal from Monday, Thursday and Saturday to Wednesday and Saturday. Otwell and Petersburg will not change. Dischinger said the amount of trash being col- lected didn't justify being open 8 hours a day. The to- tal number of hours the sites are open Commissioners approved the recommendation. The total number of hours the sites are open was reduced from 184 hours to 152 hours per week. They also approved a re- quest by Sun Energy to re- locate CR1100E near Zoar. A representative of Sun Energy said they had moved out of that area and were now able to start put- ting the road back. He said they wanted to put it back in more of a straight line of sight than the original road. He said the original road had a dogleg in it and went over to the Pike-Dubois County line near Zoar. Sun is proposing vacat- ing about a quarter-mile por- tion of the road on the coun- ty line and replacing it will a new section that goes more directly south of CR1100E to Old State Road 64. Commissioners also ap- proved a contract with Pur- due University to hire Jim Luzar to act as interim Ex- tension Director in Pike County. Luzar recently re- tired after 23 years with the Dubois County Extension Service. He explained Da- vid Ackley, who is an Ag Ed- ucator, would be job shadow- ing him and would become Extension Director after he completes a year. Ackley was hired in early summer of 2018. Luzar also explained his salary would come from Purdue University, not Pike County. In other business the commissioners approved EMS Director Chris Young advertising for bids on a new ambulance. He said it was put into the 2019 bud- get, but the commissioners had asked that he wait un- til Pike County got notice their budget had been ap- proved by the state. Auditor Ron Wilson said they recent- ly received that notice. Commissioners sched- uled the first meeting of 2019 for 8:30 a.m. Monday, January 7 in the courthouse auditorium. Ask SHIP: Changing my Medicare Advantage plan Q: I have a Medicare Advantage Plan, and I'm just not happy with it. Is there anything I can do? Beginning in 2019, there will now be a Medicare Open Enrollment Pe- riod, January 1-March 31. This is dif- ferent from past years. In the past, there was a Disenroll- ment Period January 1-February 14, which allowed Medicare beneficia- ries to drop their current Medicare Advantage plan and go back to Orig- inal Medicare. This new period will allow for one plan change. The new OEP allows in- dividuals enrolled in an MA plan, in- cluding newly MA-eligible individu- als, to make a one-time election to go to another MA plan or Original Medi- care. Individuals using the OEP to make a change may make a coordi- nating change to add or drop Part D coverage. As with several government pro- grams, when disenrolling from a Medicare Advantage plan, coverage doesn't begin immediately. It starts on the first day of the month follow- ing the date the new enrollment re- quest was received. For example, those requests re- ceived in January will become ef- fective on February 1, and those re- ceived in February will become effec- tive March. Q: If I drop my Medicare Advan- tage plan and switch back to orig- inal Medicare, would I be able to get a Medigap Policy? A Medigap plan is a supplemen- tal insurance policy that helps cov- er the deductibles and coinsurance payments not covered by Original Medicare. Traditionally, recipients can't have both a Medicare Advan- tage plan and a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan. You can apply for a Medigap policy with an insurance company. However, you would not have a guarantee of a policy. An insurance company could ask health questions and increase your premium, impose a waiting pe- riod for pre-existing conditions, or de- ny coverage based on your health his- tory. It's very important to make sure that your application for a Medigap policy has been accepted before your Medicare Advantage plan is canceled.
