Poplar Street, Petersburg Faron McLaughlin, Super- intendent, Ryan Edrington, Assistant and Sunday morn- ing worship at 10 :30 a.m. Gary had a wonderful ser- mon and we enjoyed sing- ing our Christmas Hymns During the Second World War, radio per- sonality Paul Harvey began ending his daily newscast with a feature he called, "The Rest of the Story." These factual narratives always concluded with an interesting twist that made for a surprise ending. Listeners were often fas- cinated to learn that even when it came to sto- ries with which they were familiar, there was always more to the story than what they had previously heard. This is sometimes true of the greatest sto- ry ever told, the gospel of Jesus Christ. There may be more to the story than what you have heard in the past, and the part you may not have heard just might be the very thing that is keeping you from believing what the Bible says about how to be saved from your sins. Let's begin by reviewing the part you may have already heard, the part that maybe left you feeling skeptical about the Bible's plan of salvation. The Bible clearly teaches that you cannot work your way to heaven by doing good works: "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast" (Ephesians 2:8,9). "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us…" (Titus 3:5). Perhaps you've heard these verses before, and wondered, "Does that mean God does not want us to do good works? " Since this didn't seem to make any sense to you, maybe you chose not to believe what you considered to be such an unbelievable gospel. If that's the case, it might comfort you to know that God knew in advance that people This has been a week of blowing my nose and coughing like I'm trying to cough up a lung. Doctor administered a steroid shot along with five days worth of steroid pills. Called in for help with cough and was pre- scribed more pills which didn't help at all so another call and more medicine which helped some but still very croupie. Since I have retired this has been a yearly thing so it has to be connected with life choices such as staying in when you have a cold when I would have toughed it out and been out of the house. Oh well, life goes on and I'll feel human again one of these days. One good thing about staying in is the time you have to practice the guitar and your songs, although right now I sound like a horse with his nose in a feedbag. Sing- ing without a microphone causes you to over push your voice while with a mic you can use your normal singing voice which sounds much better coming out of your amp. We have scheduled two more plays for the Christmas season and I hope I can get straightened up enough to sing. We have some cute songs as well as carols in this month's set of music. I like to sing Christ- mas cookies because it is a funny song as well as Leroy the red-necked reindeer. We always have a good time whenever we go out to entertain. We have a vinyl wood plank floor in our home and we were surprised to find water under it last week. This is an alert to anyone who has a humidifier installed on their fur- nace to keep a check on the drain because ours has a leak which seeped out quite a bit of water which ran under our flooring. A f- ter allowing the water to evaporate it seems as though our floor will survive but it could easily have been much worse. We have been doing without our humidifier for a few days The Church Page is made possible by the following Firms and Businesses: Amber Manor Care Center Petersburg — 812-354-3001 Benner & Co. At the same time, if we stop and count our bless- ings, they are many. The pages of American history are filled with the blessings of God. The hurricanes, raging fires, tornadoes and tragic stories of disasters in many parts of our world have sometimes been over- whelming. The wars in many places have taken their toll on many families. Through all these tragic events, America has not let a few extremists rob us of our faith in God. We still affirm His message and goodness through it all. Even in our darkest hour the love of God shines through in many ways. The American people face 2019 with hope, faith and optimism. In our chang- ing world God remains unchanging. The Word of God is still the world's best guide and roadmap into the future. In this time when terrorism threatens our world, we must keep our faith in God. Throughout histo- ry there have been times of testing for both government and the church. As I eval- uate where we have been and attempt to look into the fu- ture, I see many dan- gers. Many churches are in a state of lukewarmness and spiritu- al drift. Our culture has been no friend to Christianity. The moral decline, secularism and materialism have made its dark mark on the church. It is a good time to repent and return to our deep faith in God. In Ameri- ca, we need a spiritual renewal as we enter 2019. This will come through a return to the Bible and total commitment to Jesus Christ. and it is sometimes an electrifying experi- ence to open a door after sitting for awhile especially if you have on your shoes. It will be nice to be without the spark. We met a new insurance agent this week and he is trying to save us some money for our home and auto insurance. We have Metlife and they assign you an agent un- less you choose one and fill out paperwork for them to be your agent. I cannot answer for all of you but I don't understand all the terms and language in a policy so eye to eye meetings are very helpful . With my coughing and nose problems we opted to not go to the holiday dinner with Cup Creek so we missed out on a great meal. One thing about going to a church dinner if you leave hungry it is your fault because there are some good cooks in our churches and I do like to eat what they cook. Well so long for now remember to do your best to be kind and helpful instead of mean and grouchy. Yes, there are times you need to remind me of my own advice. Love you all and I hope this Christmas is going to good for you.
