Delaney Welch added five points while Kahle Young tossed in four points. Jay- lynn Capehart and Liber- ty Taylor tallied two points each for the Lady Chargers, who improved to 8 -4. "Keena and Kahle Young came to play in this game," Pike Central eighth grade coach Eric Knight said. "They both played with a lot more confidence and it showed on the court. Both girls shot the ball well and both of them handled the ball very well. I was real- ly pleased as a coach to see them handle the ball the way they did. I have known for two years now that they can do it and they both final- ly came out of the shell in the same game." "Chloe Williams, Jaylynn Capehart and Liberty Tay- lor all had big games under- neath," Knight added. "The last couple of games, we have been outrebounded as a team, but we took over the boards and a big part of that was the ability of those three girls to play hard and go af- ter everything." Knight also had praise for Welch, who – with the Lady Chargers leading 14-11 – hit a three-pointer at the end of the second period to give Pike Central a 17-11 half- time lead. "Delaney is the girl that you need shooting the ball," Knight said. "When she gets hot, she can knock them down from anywhere on the floor." Knight added, however, that he was less than pleased with his team's free throw shooting, as the Lady Char- gers went 0 -for-9 from the charity stripe. "Free throws were the one part of the game that hurt us," Knight said. "Go- ing 0 -for-9 from the charity stripe is not something we can continue to do." Miranda Wright led Princ- eton with eight points while Ranasia McIntyre and Tabi Thompson added four points each. In the seventh grade con- Taylor powers PCMS 8th grade girls past Owensville, 41-8 Liberty Taylor scored a game-high 11 points to lead the Pike Central Middle School eighth grade girls' basketball team to a 41-8 vic- tory at Owensville on Thurs- day, Dec. 13. Taylor hit five of six free throw attempts while scor- ing seven points during the first quarter as the La- dy Chargers jumped out to a 13-0 lead. "Liberty Taylor took this game over as soon as we started," said Pike Cen- tral eighth grade coach Er- ic Knight, whose team im- proved to 9 -4. "She played the best game of the year for her and she dominated in the post. Just about every shot that was missed, she ended up with the rebound. They beat and banged on her the whole first quarter and she never let up." "She has that drive and heart that every coach wants in a player," Knight added. "She struggled a few times getting the ball to drop but that never slowed her down. She kept battling and bat- tling." Jaylynn Capehart and Chloe Williams added six points each while Kahle Young tossed in four points. Rounding out the scoring for the Lady Chargers were Jasmine Leighty (3 points), Keena Young (2 points) and Madelyn Fiscus (1 point). "Madelyn Fiscus and Jayl- nn Capehart saw a lot of play- ing time during this game," Knight said. "They both came in off the bench and the momentum never slowed down. They both attacked the rim by trying to drive and score or bring in those boards. Jaylnn knocked down a few outside jumpers for us, and both played real- ly good defense." Kameran Callison, Brook- lyn Campton, Heaven Lott and Holly Stringer scored two points each for the La- dy Kickapoos. In the seventh grade game, Chloey Graham scored a game-high 29 points to lead Owensville to a 29 -15 victory over Pike Central. Brailey Mills scored seven points to lead the Lady Char- gers, who slipped to 7-6. Kel- by Leighty and Anna White- head added four points each while Wren Kabrick tossed in one point. Pike Central, which can- celed a home contest against Barr-Reeve scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 15, due to ill- ness, will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 2, when the Lady Chargers will travel to Boonville. PCMS 7th grade girls basketball team tops Forest Park 18-12 The Pike Central Middle School seventh and eighth grade girls' basketball teams split a pair of games against visiting Forest Park on Monday, Dec. 10. In the seventh grade con- test, Brailey Mills scored a game-high 12 points as the Lady Chargers defeat- ed Forest Park 18 -12. Kelby Leighty and Anna White- head added four points and two points, respectively, as Pike Central improved to 7- 4. In the eighth grade con- test, the Lady Rangers out- scored Pike Central 10 -0 in the first quarter while roll- ing to a 30 -12 victory. "Forest Park was a very tall and athletic group of girls," said Lady Chargers eighth grade coach Eric Knight, whose team slipped to 7-4. "Hats off to them. They shot the lights out and ran the floor well. They took a big lead early in the game and we had to try to play from behind. The first half, we couldn't buy a buck- et, and they hit everything they threw up." Trailing 21-3 at halftime, Pike Central battled the La- dy Rangers to a 9 -9 over the final two periods, Knight noted. "The second half, we started playing defense the way my girls can," Knight said. "With our second-half defense, we got steals and deflections and they couldn't get into their offense. We gained back a little confi- dence, but still missed a lot of jumpers in the second half." "Early in the third, For- est Park went to a full-court press to try to slow down our comeback and we got past that pretty good," Knight said. "Forest Park dropped down to a packed 2-3 zone and we couldn't knock down jumpers. This also took away our inside game." Keena Young scored six points to lead Pike Central while Chloe Williams added five points. Kennedy Willis rounded out the scoring for the Lady Chargers with one point. "We will be working on this Forest Park game the rest of the season," Knight said. "We drew them for the Pocket Athletic Conference tournament, so we know what they've got and what they can do. Over break, we know what to work on now and I believe a few good practices will get confidence back in the girls and we can get back to our style ball." Samantha Springston, the 14-year-old daugh- ter of Duane and Sheila Springston, of Selvin, and the granddaughter of Dale and Mary Bea- dles, of Winslow, bagged this 9-point, 26-inch spread buck on the first morning of gun season.
