The Press-Dispatch Sports Wednesday, December 19, 2018 B- 5 by pin. Freshman Jon Cannon won two of nine bouts. At 145 pounds, Cannon went 2-6 with one win by deci- sion and one win by forfeit. Cannon also went 0 -1 at 152 pounds. Senior Jaydon Gordon, wrestling at 132 pounds, went 1-8 with one win by forfeit. Sophomore Cody Davis, wrestling at 220 pounds, al- so went 1-8 with one win by pin. "Cody was able to get his first win this weekend at 220 against North," Mc- Cain said. "He just hit a pow- er double and drove that kid across the mat and pinned him. He was fired up, and so was the rest of the team." "I shook his hand and asked him the same thing my coach, Scott Cook, asked me in sixth grade when I fi- nally won my first match – 'How did that feel? '" Mc- Cain added. "And he an- swered that same way they always do – 'Great! ' It's a special moment. Once you get that first win, it's hard to not strive to get that feel- ing back." In addition, sophomore Lane Potts, wrestling at 120 pounds, went 1-1 with one win by forfeit, while fresh- man Adon Sanchez, wres- tling at 285 pounds, went 0 -9. Overall, Pike Central wrestlers won 29 of 89 in- dividual bouts – 12 by pin, one by major decision, two by decision and 14 by forfeit. Of the Chargers' 60 losses in individual bouts, 49 were by pin, three by technical fall, four by major decision and five by decision. In addition, Pike Central, as a team, forfeited a total of 28 individual bouts – sev- en each at 106 pounds, 120 pounds, 182 pounds and 195 pounds. "We were missing some guys in the lineup due to ill- ness and injuries, so we gave up a lot of forfeits," McCain said. McCain said that one of the highlights of the week- end was the Chargers' du- al match against Evansville North. The Huskies' head coach, Billy Hewig, served as Pike Central's head wres- tling coach for the last seven years – following two years as an assistant coach – and also served as an assistant football coach for nine years, from 2008 to 2016. "Our match against North and Billy Hewig was fun and something I'll always remember," McCain said. "We talked that day before we headed to Evansville and wished each other luck. We still stay in touch quite a bit. I'm always picking his brain about coaching things, and he's a big help. We remain great friends, and will be- come competitive rivals as the years go by." "Our overall score wasn't close, but we gave up three forfeits, which hurt us," Mc- Cain added. "So we had 11 head-to-head matches and ended up 5 -6 against them. There are a few of those loss- es I feel we will get back at Forest Park when we see them again Jan. 5th. We will be ready." McCain noted that the Evansville Harrison Invita- tional ended a nine-day pe- riod during which the Char- gers competed in 19 du- al matches, including eight during the Pocket Athletic Conference Duals at Heri- tage Hills on Friday, Dec. 7, and Saturday, Dec. 8, and two more during a tri-meet hosted by Jasper on Tues- day, Dec. 11. "I can't say enough how proud I am of these guys," McCain said. "We just wres- tled 19 duals in nine days. That takes a tremendous toll on one's body and mind, and we came out of it with only a few injuries. But I think, after our break, we will be healed up and ready to fin- ish the season out strong." "This sport isn't for the weak," McCain added. "Not everybody can handle it. I am proud of all these guys for the heart they possess and what they are willing to do in order to compete." The Chargers will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 5, when Pike Central will com- pete in the Forest Park Invi- tational. STOP BY FOR EVEN MORE RED TAGGED ITEMS! $ 29 99 Greer, Miller spark come-from-behind win over Lincoln A win by decision by Pike Central High School sopho- more Isaiah Greer and a win by pin by sophomore Lane Miller sparked a come- from-behind 33-30 win over Vincennes Lincoln during a three-team meet hosted by Jasper on Tuesday, Dec. 11. With the Alices leading 21-6, Greer – wrestling at 120 pounds – defeated Vin- cennes Lincoln's Blake Wat- son by a 10 -5 decision, pull- ing the Chargers to within 21-9. A fter Miller – wrestling at 126 pounds – pinned the Alices' Nate Harris to cut the Vincennes Lincoln's lead to 21-15, a forfeit win at 132 pounds by senior Jaydon Gordon pulled Pike Central even at 21-21. The Alices took a 27-21 lead when Parker Neeley won by pin over Chargers' junior Blake Henson at 138 pounds but a forfeit win by Pike Central freshman Jon Cannon at 145 pounds tied up the score at 27-27. Vincennes Lincoln re- gained the lead – at 30 -27 – when Colton McCrary won by a 6 -4 decision over Char- gers freshman Wyatt Fra- sure at 152 pounds. However, a win by forfeit by Pike Central junior Tyler Kirby at 160 pounds – the final individual bout of the match – gave Pike Central a 33-30 victory. "Isaiah Greer wrestled well for us," Chargers head coach Ryan McCain said. "He bumped up to 120 and wrestled a much larger kid, and stepped up and got the job done. Lane Miller went out and put his kid away with ease. Lane is wrestling pretty well, but we tend to have some trouble getting away from guys on the bot- tom. We've got to work to get that better." Against the host Wild- cats, however, Pike Central surrendered five losses by pin, two by decision and two by forfeit in a 48 -21 defeat. Picking up wins by pin for the Chargers were Greer, wrestling at 113 pounds; Kirby, wrestling at 160 pounds; and senior Hunt- er Kunz, wrestling at 182 pounds; while Cannon won his bout at 145 pounds by an 8 -6 decision. "Greer looked really good, pinned his kid in the first," McCain said. "Tyler Kirby went out and got to work on his kid. These wins are important because Jas- per is a sectional opponent. Jon Cannon gutted out a tough win in overtime. The best part was the overtime round. Jon was fired up and showed zero fatigue, and his opponent was pretty gassed. Jon was able to se- cure the takedown and get the win." "We still are giving up pins and not pushing the pace for six minutes," Mc- Cain added. "It's not a con- ditioning issue. In tight spots, we just don't show a sense of urgency some- times, and we just don't want it as bad as the other team sometimes. I've talk- ed to the guys about it. We look really sharp and in- tense in the wrestling room, but, for some reason, we're having a hard time transfer- ring that to meets where it matters. I've seen this be- fore. We will figure it out. It's just going to take some time. We're a very young team, and we're learning every day." In the other match of the evening, Jasper defeated Vincennes Lincoln 58 -15.
