By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Freshman Alaysha Bran- denberger scored a game- high 28 points to lead Boon- ville to a 55 -48 victory over host Pike Central in high school girls' basketball ac- tion on Wednesday, Nov. 7. A fter hitting six of 12 field goal attempts – includ- ing three of six tries from beyond the three-point arc – while scoring 15 points during the first half, Bran- denberger made five of nine shots – including three of five from three-point range – while scoring 13 points during the second half, when the Lady Pioneers outscored Pike Central 26 - 18 to overcome a 30 -29 half- time deficit. "She lit us up," Lady Char- gers head coach Kyle Mc- Cutchen said of the 5 -foot-6 guard. "We tried every which way to defend her, and she did a good job." "Defensively, we just nev- er really competed," Mc- Cutchan added. "I'm not going to say we didn't play hard, but we just didn't dig in to get the shots or get the loose balls or rebounds when we needed them – crunch time." With the score tied 4- 4 early in the contest, Pike Central (1-1) scored nine straight points – on a bas- ket by junior Jayln Nelson, a three-point play and a lay-up by sophomore Mallory Hick- ey and a basket by senior Hailey Marchino – to open up a 13-4 lead with 3:28 left in the opening period. A fter a basket by Branden- berger cut the deficit to 13-6, a pair of free throws by La- dy Charger junior Lauren Vaughn stretched Pike Cen- tral's lead back to nine points – at 15 -6 – with 2:29 remain- ing in the first quarter. Back-to-back three-point- ers by Brandenberger pulled Boonville to within 15 -12 be- fore a basket by senior Bec- ca Crow gave the Lady Char- gers a 17-12 lead heading in- to the second period. A basket by Boonville ju- nior Ramey Wilder at the start of the second quarter narrowed the deficit to 17-14 before back-to-back baskets by freshman Mallory Hunt and sophomore Kenzie Pow- ell extended the Lady Char- gers' lead to 21-14 with 6:47 remaining in the first half. Boonville (1-0) answered by scoring eight straight points – four by Branden- berger and two each by Wilder and junior Maken- zie Mason – to take a 22-21 lead with 4:37 left in the sec- ond period. A fter junior Jenna Horrall scored to give Pike Central a 23-22 lead, the Lady Pio- neers – on a three-pointer by Brandenberger and a basket by sophomore Jaelynn Wall – scored five points in a row to take a 27-23 lead with 2:14 remaining in the first half. The Lady Chargers would answer with back-to-back baskets by Nelson and Hor- rall to tie the score at 27-27. Then, following a basket by Wilder that gave Boon- ville a 29 -27 lead, Marchino hit a three-pointer as Pike Central went into halftime holding a 30 -29 lead. During the first half, the Lady Chargers made 13 of 27 field goal attempts – a 48.1 percent average – and were 3-for-4 from the free throw line while turning the ball over just six times. "We came out executing, and, I'll be honest, I think if we would have just been pa- tient all night, we would have scored more than we did," McCutchan said. "When you score 30 at half, usual- ly you're going to be in good Brandenberger scores 28 as Boonville beats Lady Chargers 55-48 shape." A fter a pair of free throws by Marchino at the start of the second half extended the Lady Chargers' lead to 32-29, back-to-back baskets by Wilder and senior Brooke Allen pushed Boonville back into the lead – at 33-32 – with 6:40 left in the third period. Following an exchange of baskets, Hickey made the second of two free throw attempts to tie the score at 35 -35 with 5:40 remaining in the third quarter. However, back-to-back three-pointers by Branden- berger sparked a 10 -2 scor- ing run as the Lady Pioneers took a 45 -27 lead. Pike Central rallied, how- ever, scoring five straight points – on back-to-back baskets by Marchino and Nelson and a free throw by Vaughn – to close to within 45 -42 with 6:50 left in the fourth quarter. Boonville subsequently scored six straight points – on a three-pointer by Bran- denberger and a basket and a free throw by Wilder – to extend its lead to 51-42 with 2:25 remaining. A basket by Vaughn with 1:18 left, cutting the defi- cit to 51-44, ended a stretch during which the Lady Char- gers went 0 -for-6 from the floor and 0 -for-4 from the free throw line while turn- ing the ball over four times. Boonville fared not much better during that same stretch, however, making just two of eight field goals and one of two free throws while turning the ball over five times. "They didn't shoot it well in the fourth," McCutchan noted. "We had every op- portunity to get back in the game, then we went cold, couldn't hit a shot, couldn't finish around the basket." "We did a better job com- peting in the fourth, when our backs were against the wall," McCutchan added. "We got a few of the loose balls. We forced a few turn- overs that we didn't force in the first few quarters. But we couldn't capitalize. We couldn't finish on the oth- er end." Marchino led Pike Cen- tral with 13 points while Nel- son added 10 points. Hickey and Horrall pitched in six points each while Vaughn netted five points. Crow had four points, and Hunt and Powell had two points each. Marchino and Nelson both grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Nelson also dished out a game-high sev- en assists. Vaughn had three assists. For the game, the La- dy Chargers made 20 of 48 field goal attempts – a 41.7 percent average – and were 7-for-14 from the free throw line while turning the ball over 16 times. From beyond the three- point line, Pike Central made just one of 11 attempts. "We were there in the game," McCutchan said. "We gave ourselves every shot to win. We just didn't make the plays down the stretch, missed a lot of open shots. I kept wanting to hit a shot, call a timeout, get our defense set, but we wouldn't hit one." For Boonville, Wilder add- ed 17 points while grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds. Blankenberger and Wilder both had three steals and dished out three assists. For the game, the Lady Pioneers made 23 of 47 field goal attempts – a 48.9 per- cent average – and three of six tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 17 times. From beyond the three- point line, the Lady Pioneers made six of 13 attempts. "I expect us to be in every game we play all year," Mc- Cutchan said. "I think we're good enough. We just have to execute and compete for four quarters. I don't think we really flat out got after them, and they made us pay for it today. They shot the ball exceptionally well."
