A fter a basket by North Posey's Erin Hoehn pulled the Lady Vikings to with- in 6 -5 with 4:53 left in the second period, Pike Central scored 12 straight points – seven by Williams and five by Kahle Young – to take an 18 -5 halftime lead. Back-to-back three point- ers by Hoehn and Lauren Kihn cut the deficit to 18 -11 with 3:48 remaining in the third quarter before the La- dy Chargers scored 10 of the next 12 points – four each by Williams and Kahle Young and two by Keena Young – to stretch their lead to 28 - 13 early in the fourth period. A basket and a three-point- er by Hoehn – sandwiched around a free throw by Pike Central's Tiffany Arteaga – pulled the Lady Vikings to within 29 -18 with just 11 sec- onds remaining. "My girls came to play again tonight," said Lady Chargers head coach Er- ic Knight, whose team im- proved to 3-0. "We started out the game a little nervous and sloppy, but they came around late in the first quar- ter. I'm proud of the girls for not dropping their heads and getting back to attack- ing and driving the ball." Junior Lauren Vaughn scored 14 points, junior Jenna Hor- rall and sophomore Mallory Hickey netted 13 points each, senior Becca Crow added 12 points and junior Jayln Nel- son had 10 points as the Lady Chargers improved to 2-1. "It was a great team effort," Pike Central head coach Kyle McCutchan said. "We got more floor burns tonight and, as a coach, I love that." "We won this game because we outworked them," Mc- Cutchan added. "When you play as hard as you can play, a lot of times things go in your favor. So it was a big win for us, as far as the effort. The effort was great tonight." Horrall scored eight points during the first quarter as the Lady Chargers took a 13-9 lead. A basket by Vaughn at the start of the second period extended Pike Central's lead to 15 -9. South Knox would score nine of the next 11 points – three by freshman Natalee Holscher and two each by senior Paige Cavins, junior Hannah Ivers and sophomore Lexi Detweiler – to take an 18 -17 lead with 3:25 left in the second quarter. A fter a free throw by freshman Mallory Hunt and a bas- ket by sophomore Mallory Hickey gave Pike Central a 20 - 18 lead, a pair of free throws by Ivers and a three-point- er by Holscher propelled the Lady Spartans back into the lead at 23-20. Following an exchange of baskets, Hickey hit two free throws to pull the Lady Chargers to within 25 -24 at half- time. South Knox would try to put the Lady Chargers away in the third period, outscoring Pike Central 16 -8 to take a 41- 32 lead with 1:28 left in the quarter. A pair of free throws by Vaughn and a basket by Nelson – who committed her second personal foul with 4:35 left in the opening period and watched from the bench for the rest of the first half – cut the deficit to 41-36 before a lay-up by Ivers stretched South Knox's lead to 43-36 heading in- to the fourth quarter. Back-to-back baskets by Hickey and Horrall pulled Pike Central to within 43-40 with 7:27 left in the final period, but the Lady Spartans extended its lead to five points – 45 - 40 – on a basket by junior Mykayla Couchenour with 6:40 remaining. Ed Cahill photo PCHS runners compete in Nike Cross Country Midwest Regional Championships By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Several members of the Pike Central High School girls' and boys' cross coun- try teams competed in the Nike Cross Country Mid- west Regional Champion- ships at the Lavern Gib- son Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute on Sunday, Nov. 11. The meet – run on the same course where the IHSA A Cross Country State Finals had been held on Saturday, Oct. 27 – fea- tured runners from Indi- ana, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio. Five Lady Chargers – competing as the Char- ger Run Club – participat- ed in the Girls' Freshman/ Sophomore race, which featured 154 total runners: • Freshman Quinlan Teague placed 99th with a time of 23:45. • Sophomore Char- lotte Dudenhoeffer placed 119th with a time of 24:35. • Sophomore Jenna Meyer placed 125th with a time of 24:55. • Freshman Laney John- son placed 138th with a time of 26:48. • Freshman Morgan An- derson placed 144th with a time of 27:21. Macy Schelp, a sopho- more at Lutheran South High School in St. Lou- is, Mo., placed first with a time of 19:39. As a team, the Charger Run Club placed 10th with a score of 282 points.
