B-2 Sports Wednesday, November 14, 2018 The Press-Dispatch throws by Detweiler left Pike Central holding a 57-55 lead, a lay-up by Hickey gave the Lady Chargers a 59 -55 lead with 2:20 left. Following a pair of missed free throws by Cavins with 1:33 left, a basket by Ivers narrowed the deficit to 59 - 57 with 1:20 left. Fouled with 1:07 remain- ing following a turnover by Pike Central, Detweiler missed both ends of the dou- ble bonus. Ivers grabbed the offensive rebound, but was unable to get her shot to fall. Horrall, who grabbed the rebound of Ivers' missed shot, was fouled, and hit one of two free throws to extend the Lady Chargers' lead to 60 -57. Then, after a missed shot by freshman Macie Couche- nour, Vaughn made one of two free throws, giving Pike Central a 61-57 lead. A fter senior Macey Hazel- man made one of two free throws to narrow the La- dy Chargers' lead to 61-58 with 37.3 seconds remain- ing, Marchino went 2-for-2 from the charity stripe to give Pike Central a 63-58 lead with 36.1 seconds left. Following a three-pointer by Ivers that pulled South Knox to within 63-61, Crow went to the line for the dou- ble bonus with 8.3 seconds left. A fter Crow made her first attempt to give the La- dy Chargers' a 64-61 lead, South Knox head coach Hollie Anson-Evans called a time out. When play resumed, Crow calmly sank her sec- ond free throw, extending Pike Central's lead to 65 -61. "I honestly try not to think too much about it because, then, you know, your arms start shaking and our legs start shaking," Crow said. "I just kind of go out, like, this is just like a practice. So it's easier to knock it down that way." Crow's free throws proved to be the difference as Ivers sank a three-pointer – her fourth of the game – as time expired. During the fourth quar- ter, Pike Central made eight of 10 field goal attempts and hit 12 of 16 tries from the free throw line. South Knox, meanwhile, made just seven of 20 field goal attempts and just three of 11 tries from the free throw line during the fourth quarter. "It was a physical game and we stepped up down the stretch," McCutchan said. "Both teams were in foul trouble, both teams had at least one or two kids foul out, but we stepped up. We made plays in crunch time." "Sometimes we don't make those plays, and we made a few bad ones tonight, but hitting free throws down the stretch was what won us the game," McCutchan add- ed. "Those two by Becca at the end iced it." "(McCutchen) told us don't let this one go," Crow said. "We let the last game on Wednesday go, and he said, 'Don't let this one go.' So I think it just kind of gave everyone a little extra boost to get the job done." A fter going only nine deep during a 55 -48 loss to Boonville two nights earli- er, McCutchan played a to- tal of 11 girls during the win against South Knox. The move paid off, as the Lady Charger subs put up 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Hickey, who had started each of Pike Cen- tral's first two games, came off the bench to hit five of six field goal attempts and two of four tries from the free throw line while grabbing five rebounds. Against Boonville, Pike Central's bench players to- taled eight points and six re- bounds. "The bench was huge to- night," McCutchan said. "I let them know that I let them down the last game. I didn't sub enough. Tonight, they picked me up when I asked them to pick me up. I admit when I make a mistake, and they picked me up, so I was proud of them for that." Horrall grabbed a game- high nine rebounds for the Lady Chargers. Crow dished out three assists while Vaughn had two steals. For the game, Pike Cen- tral made 21 of 44 field goal attempts – a 47.7 percent av- erage – and hit 19 of 28 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 17 times. Ivers paced South Knox with 27 points while Det- weiler added 12 points. De- tweiler also led the Lady Spartans in rebounds with eight while Cavins had sev- en rebounds and a game- high four steals. Mykayla Couchenour netted seven points, dished out three as- sists and had three steals. For the game, South Knox made 23 of 54 field goal at- tempts – a 42.6 percent av- erage – and hit 10 of 23 at- tempts from the free throw line while turning the ball over 16 times.
