Grant ap- plications for programs and projects up to $ 3,000 are due at midnight on Monday, Oc- tober 8. Organizations must complete applications online via the Foundation's website at CommunityFoundation- Alliance.org/Pike. The Foundation's Commu- nity Good Grants Program is an open grant cycle for char- itable organizations seeking funding and is a competitive process. Grants are normal- ly given as one-time support of a project but may be con- sidered for additional sup- port or for expansions or outgrowths of an initial proj- ect. The Foundation awards Community Good grants to charitable partners located in or directly serving Pike County. Grant applications are reviewed by a volunteer selection committee that makes recommendations to the local advisory board, and final approval is made by the Board of Directors of the Community Foundation Alli- ance, Inc. Projects and activities may be from charitable en- tities qualified as 501(c)(3) or 509(a) organizations and from governmental agencies and other organizations not classified as 501(c)(3) pub- lic charities when the proj- ect or activity has a charita- ble purpose. Agencies and projects not eligible for funding include religious organizations for religious purposes, politi- cal parties or campaigns, endowment creation or debt reduction, normal operating costs, capital campaigns, an- nual appeals or membership contributions, and travel re- quests for groups or individ- uals such as bands, sports teams, or school classes. Visit communityfounda- tionallliance.org/pike for online applications and fur- ther instructions. Questions and requests for grant appli- cation training should be di- rected to Cindy Gaskins at 812-766 -0550 or email direc- tor@pikecommunityfounda- tion.org. The Pike County Commu- nity Foundation is one of nine regional county affiliates of the Community Foundation Alliance. The Alliance holds more than 1,200 named funds established by indi- viduals, families, business- es, civic groups, and agen- cies to improve the quality of life in their local commu- nities, with charitable assets nearing $100 million. During fiscal year 2017, grants and scholarships awarded from all Alliance funds to bene- fit the programs, projects, and people in the nine affil- iate counties totaled nearly $2,366,000. The Alliance provides each affiliate with manage- ment, administrative, and de- velopment expertise and ser- vices, so every local Founda- tion can focus on promoting philanthropy, building en- dowment, and making a dif- ference in their community. Public input sought in CISMA Surveys Pike Gibson CISMA (Co- operative Invasive Spe- cies Management Area) is a grassroot partnership or- ganization recently formed to address the threat of in- vasive species. They aim to work with partners to pool resources and information about invasive species in Pike and Gibson counties. Invasive species are non- native species that cause harm to the economy, human health, and/or the environ- ment. Invasive species can refer to plants, animals, or in- sects. An example of an inva- sive species in Pike and Gib- son Counties would be John- son Grass. It is considered one of the worst weeds in the world. Johnson Grass is native to the Mediterranean and produces over 80,000 seeds in a single sea-son and can produce over 200 ft of rhizomes. The seeds are viable for more than 20 years. Johnson Grass can produce deadly amounts of cyanide if wilted, frost damaged, or trampled, that can prevent animals from using oxygen. Pike Gibson CISMA is looking for local citizens to take a short survey. The survey results will help de- termine: the community's general awareness of inva- sive species, who is current- ly managing problem inva- sive species on their proper- ty, and what types of invasive species are a concern in the county. These results will al- so help guide the CISMA to- wards different events and goals throughout the year. According to the Invasive Species Technician, Heath- er Zengler: "The CISMA is looking for local input. The CISMA will plan events geared towards the answers from ;the survey from local individuals." Anyone who lives or works in the area is encouraged to take the survey, even if they do not know any-thing about invasive species. There is one survey for each of the counties. The surveys can be found on Pike Gibson CISMA Facebook page or a hard copy can be found at your local SWCD office. For more information, contact Heather Zengler at 812-423- 4426 x3 or heather.zengler@ in.nacdnet.net.
