The Lady Chargers scored the first eight points of the first set, in- cluding seven following serves by Sorgius, to take an 8 -0 lead. The Lady Trojans ral- lied, however, pulling to within two points twice – at 10 -8 and 14-12 – before Pike Central scored three straight points, including two following serves by Eve Burns, to open up a 17-12 lead. Then, leading 21- 18, the Lady Chargers scored four of the next five points, including two following serves by Emma Hunt, to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three match. In the second set, Pike Central scored seven of the first eight points, in- cluding four following serves by Hunt, to take a 7-1 lead. Oakland City would pull to within two points twice – at 9 -7 and 10 -8 – before the Lady Chargers scored the next four points, in- cluding three following serves by Burns, to ex- tend their lead to 14-8. A fter the Lady Trojans scored to narrow the defi- cit to 14-9, Pike Central rolled off seven straight points, including six fol- lowing serves by Sorgi- us, to open up a 21-9 lead enroute to the straight- set win. Hunt had 11 service points for the Lady Char- gers who improved to 2-1 – while Burns added five. "The A-team played well," Pike Central head coach Stephanie Shedd said. "Our serving was great and we worked as a team. We even had a few spikes from Riley Moore. Emma Hunt and Lakin Sorgius served especial- ly well with multiple ac- es from each player. We played a great match." In the B-team match, Oakland City defeated Pike Central in straight sets, 25 -9, 25 -9. Jackie Berry, Lily Brinkman and Brylee Walker all had one service points for the Lady Char- gers, who fell to 0 -2. "The B-team came out flat and sluggish," Shedd said. "We couldn't quite get our momentum going. We will continue to work on serving and communi- cating as a team." On Thursday, Sept. 6, Pike Central dropped a 15 -25, 25 -16, 16 -14 loss at South Knox. Hunt and Sorgius paced the Lady Chargers with six service points each. Moore and Myra Hens- ler both had four ser- vice points while Burns and Karly Morson added three each. A fter splitting the first two sets, Pike Central led 14-12 in the third set before the Lady Spar- tans rallied, scoring four straight points to get the win. In the B-match, the Lady Chargers took the match to the tie-breaking third set before dropping a 19 -25, 25 -24, 15 -4 loss to South Knox. Lillian Mann led Pike Central with nine service points while Walker had five. Lily Brinkman and Kynlee Franklin had two apiece. "Both teams played well," Shedd said. "We fought hard but just couldn't get the win. Lil- lian Mann played a great game. Her passing was awesome and she was a big help to the team. She served well too. We will continue to drill funda- mental skills." Pike Central, which hosted Francisco on Tues- day, Sept. 11, will travel to North Knox on Monday, Sept. 17. Asked how she was do- ing when the tournament was suspended on Satur- day, Bohnert replied "not very well." "So I'm glad I got a second chance," said Bohnert, who had one birdie and made three pars during Monday's round. "It was really hard to play out here Saturday. It was very wet." Bohnert – who holds the nine-hole school record (36) and 18 -hole record (75) – said that her goal Monday was to get her best score. "But I kind of just wanted to keep my head on straight, stay happy through it all, and just play the round of golf that I know that I can play," Bohnert said. "She left a lot of strokes out there, but third place in this conference this year is pretty solid," Gideon said. "All-conference again for her – it's quite an honor." Pike Central junior Mad- ison Warner tied for 12th place with a 49; junior Had- ley Holder was 16th with a 53; junior Emma Rainey tied for 21st with a 56; and fresh- man Carissa Moudy tied for 24th with a 60. "Some other girls stepped up," Gideon said. "Madison Warner with a 49 – that's out- standing. I mean, she was a couple strokes away from being all-conference herself, playing golf for two months. So, yeah, I'm pleased with how we played today as a whole." Pike Central had a team score of 200. Gibson South- ern placed first with a 178 while South Spencer was second with a 197. North Posey was fourth with a 205, followed by Southridge (207), Forest Park (217), Tell City (230), Tecumseh (246) and Heri- tage Hills (259). "We set a goal – we want- ed to finish in the top three, and we did," Gideon said. "That's good. We'll take it. We could easily have fin- ished fifth or sixth if we didn't play well." "It feels great," Bohnert added. "We've worked all year long, trying to get the team ready for this match. They've worked really hard for this moment." On Saturday, Sept. 15, Pike Central will compete in the sectional tourna- ment, which will be held at the Country Club of Old Vin- cennes. "You never know," Gide- on said. "We've beat teams in the sectional that will probably go to regional, so there's a shot. We've got a shot. We've just got to go and play well. It's a differ- ent kind of course. It's pret- ty short, pretty narrow, lot of trees. But you've just got to go over there and think your way around a little bit." "I think we're ready for next week," Bohnert add- ed. "I think it will be a fun challenge for everyone. But I think we've worked hard enough for this match com- ing up." PCMS boys' soccer team improves to 9-0-2 with wins over South Knox, Southridge Joey Ridao scored two goals – including one on a penalty kick – while Jo- nas Martinez and Camer- on Roy added one each as the Pike Central Middle School boys' soccer team improved to 9 -0 -2 with a 4- 1 win over host South Knox on Wednesday, Sept. 5. Martinez, Sam Nelson and Ryan Whann dished out one assist each while Gabe Jones had four saves in goal for the Chargers. "Gabe Jones played a strong game in the goal and made a lot of tough saves," Pike Central head coach Tanner Gray said. "Joey Ridao scored the first goal of the game and we took ad- vantage of the momentum we had. We had a lot of help off the bench from Cade Morgan and Riley Mos- by. Ryan Whann came off the bench and had a long throw-in that led to a goal." Pike Central 8, Southridge 1 Joey Ridao netted four goals and assisted on an- other to lead Pike Central to an 8 -1 victory over host Southridge on Wednesday, Sept. 4. Isaac Burdette, Bannon Mills, Nolan Nelson and Xavier Shoultz added one goal each as the Chargers improved to 8 -0 -2. "My team struggled in the opening parts of this game coming off the long weekend," Pike Central head coach Tanner Gray said. "It was also a very hot and humid night. But my team always finds a way to score goals. Once we figure out what's working, the of- fense comes alive. South- ridge is a developing pro- gram. I look to see them get better and better every year." In the B contest, Cam- eron Roy scored five goals while Ryan Whann and An- drew Woods added one each to lead the Chargers to a 7- 0 victory over the Raiders. Woods also had two as- sists for Pike Central. "Andrew Woods and Cam Roy were on the same page in this game," Gray said. "Offensively, Andrew's pass- ing created many chances to score. Cam seemed to al- ways be in the right place at the right time." Pike Central, which played at Washington on Monday, Sept. 10, will host Wood Memorial on Wednes- day, Sept. 12, and Northeast Dubois on Friday, Sept. 14. The Chargers will finish off their regular season with a road match at Forest Park on Monday, Sept. 17, and a home match against Vin- cennes Clark on Wednes- day, Sept. 19. The Pike Central High School girls' soccer team slipped to 2-5 -1 with a 1-0 loss at Princeton on Thurs- day, Sept. 6. "As always, we played an excellent game, and our passes were under more control than they've ever been," Lady Char- gers head coach Eric Mc- Cord said. "We had multi- ple shots on goal that just barely missed their tar- get. Our defense and goal- ie also played a great game, clearing the ball out every time it was necessary." Pike Central, which host- ed South Knox on Tuesday, Sept. 11, will return to ac- tion on Monday, Sept. 17, when the Lady Chargers will host Northeast Du- bois. Pike Central then will play away games at North Posey on Tuesday, Sept. 18, and at Gibson Southern on Thursday, Sept. 20. PCHS girls' soccer team falls 1-0 at Princeton lis, Kahle Young, Jaylynn Capehart, Hannah Fair and Lainey Leighty. "With the score advan- tage we gained in the first half, we were able to use the remainder of the game to try new things," Coan said. "This allowed the girls to team up and focus on dif- ferent positions/aspects during the game." The Lady Chargers will host Washington Catholic at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 13, at the Old Petersburg Gym soccer field, before traveling to Gibson South- ern on Saturday, Sept. 15. Pike Central will wrap up its regular season with home games against Jasper at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18, and Vincennes Clark at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19. Both contests will be played at the OPG soccer field.
