PCHS boys' soccer team overcomes 2-0 second-half deficit for 3-2 win at South Knox A goal by senior Chris- tian Benson late in the sec- ond half as the Pike Central High School boys' soccer team – trailing host South Knox 2-0 at halftime – ral- lied in the match's final 10 minutes for a 3-2 victory on Tuesday, Sept. 4. "A couple of mental mis- takes cost us and we had to play from behind for most of the game," Chargers head coach Jacob Western said. "Christian did a good job creating chances for us the whole second half." Western noted, however, that Pike Central's starting goalie, junior Noah Whann, went down with an injury on a corner kick with about 25 minutes left in the game, and the Chargers turned to their junior varsity goalie, sophomore Sammy Ballard, as Whann's replacement. "Sammy made a couple big saves right away that really gave the team some- thing positive to feed off of," Western said. "Noah left the game with eight saves. Sam- my finished the game with six saves." With approximately 10 minutes left in the sec- ond half, Pike Central ju- nior Ethan Scott was able to beat the South Knox goalie to a ball and slid it inside the back post, cutting the Spar- tans' lead to 2-1. A few minutes later, se- nior Austin Holder finished what Western described as "a nice left-footed goal" off of an assist by sophomore Con- nor Young, tying the score at 2-2. "The boys were playing with intensity and I knew we would have a couple good chances left," Western said. Then, with about three minutes left, Benson beat several defenders and put away the go-ahead goal. "This is the second time we have scored three goals in the last 10 minutes this year," Western said. "I love how we continue to play hard for 80 minutes every game." Junior Andrew Clark add- ed an assist for the Char- gers, who improved to 5 -2. Pike Central 3, North Posey 2 A goal by junior Sam Hen- son midway through the sec- ond half snapped a 2-2 tie, lifting Pike Central to a 3-2 victory over visiting North Posey on Thursday, Sept. 6. "Against North Posey, we suffered a similar start to the South Knox game, as a lapse defensively cost us an early goal," Chargers head coach Jacob Western said. However, Western not- ed, Pike Central scored the game-tying goal off of a throw in by senior Christian Benson about 15 minutes in- to the first half. Approximately 10 minutes later, a throw-in by Benson that senior Jacob Vest head- ed into the goal gave the Chargers a 2-1 lead. "We finished the first half happy to be in the lead be- cause we really felt like we were outplayed for most of the half," Western said. "We were unable to connect pass- es with any consistency." "In the second half, we gave up an early goal to even the score 2-2," Western said. "The boys stayed composed throughout the whole game, even though we were caught defending deep in our half for most of the game." Midway through the sec- ond half, a shot by junior Ethan Scott was blocked, but Henson "jumped on it and put it past the keeper," according to Western. "We were able to stay strong defensively and come out with the 3-2 win against a good conference team," Western said. Western noted that sopho- more goalie Sammy Ballard, who started the place of the Chargers' injured starter, junior Noah Whann, "was great in goal," collecting a total of seven saves. "Sam, (sophomore) Re- ece Ashley and ( junior) An- drew Clark did a great job stepping up when needed, and giving quality minutes," Western said. Benson had two assists for the Chargers while Scott had one assist. "I am really excited to get four days of practice in be- fore a huge test against Her- itage Hills," Western said. "We are finding ways to win right now, but I still believe we have better soccer ahead of us." Pike Central enters Thursday's match having won 13 straight against PAC foes. The Chargers' last con- ference loss was a 2-1 set- back at Heritage Hills on Sept. 15, 2016.
