Originally named "The Hill Course" when it was built in 1917 by renowned designer Donald Ross, the course – which has been rated the No. 2 public golf course in Indiana by Golf Week – was renamed after a $5 million restoration ef- fort in 2005. "It was an awesome experience for our girls to get to play on such an historic golf course," La- dy Chargers head coach Jarrod Gideon said. "The girls were pretty much in awe. It is a far more dif- ficult set-up than we are used to, but certainly was a lot of fun." Pike Central was sched- uled to play in the Pock- et Athletic Conference Championship on Satur- day, Sept. 8, at the Oak- land City Golf Course. However, the event was postponed to Monday, Sept. 10, due to inclement weather. The Lady Chargers will play in the sectional meet on Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Country Club of Old Vincennes. Huff places first to lead PCHS boys' cross country team in quad meet Senior Draven Huff placed first overall as the Pike Cen- tral High School boys' cross country team finished sec- ond in a quad meet hosted by the Chargers at Prides Creek Park on Tuesday, Sept. 4. Huff completed the 3.1-mile course with a time of 17:53, while South Knox senior Gar- rett Couchenour placed sec- ond with a time of 18:23. Chargers' sophomore Ijaa Chambers, meanwhile, fin- ished fifth with a time of 18:54. "Draven led from about 600 meters into the race for the rest of the way and just kind of set the bar mental- ly as far as what it was going to take to keep up with him," Pike Central head coach Josh Roach said. "Ijaa did a good job of moving up throughout the field, even falling on one hill and getting up and man- aging to keep his time close to where he has been." In addition, junior A.J. Hill placed 15th with a time of 22:12; sophomore Colt Arm- strong placed 16th with a time of 22:44; and junior Sam The- ising and sophomore Trent Zimmerman placed 17th and 18th, respectively, with a time of 22:50. "A.J. Hill had a great sec- ond half of the race and we are really looking to get him to lead our second pack up clos- er to our first," Roach said. "Our big goal is to get that group with Colt, A.J., Sam and Trent as close to Ijaa as we can." As a team, Pike Central scored 49 points. South Knox, which claimed five of the top 12 spots, was first with 22 points. North Daviess and Washington Catholic also participated but did not have enough runners to qualify for a team score. In the girls' race, Lady Charger sophomore Lib- by Stone placed fifth overall with a time of 24:03 as Pike Central finished third with 54 points, trailing South Knox (22 points) and North Da- viess (47). "Our girls did a great job of bunching together again as they finished 5th, 10th, 11th, 12th and 16th," Roach said. "They do a great job of push- ing each other when they are bunched like that." "Throughout this race, we had multiple times where we would challenge our girls to catch specific people from other teams," Roach add- ed. "Our girls took to that challenge and either passed these people or caught them and made them work to stay in front. We love seeing that competitiveness take over and the girls realize that will take them a long way at the end of the year." Pike Central, which par- ticipated in the Princeton In- vitational on Tuesday, Sept. 11, will compete in the South Knox Invitational on Satur- day, Sept. 15, and in the Barr- Reeve Invitational on Tues- day, Sept. 18, before hosting the Pike Central Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 22. In the girls' race, sixth grader Xavery Weisman placed fifth with a time of 13:56 as Pike Central fin- ished second in the three- team meet.
