Ella Adams led the La- dy Chargers with four kills while Brailey Mills and Ad- dy Russell added three each. "These kills were on- ly possible with great sets by Karley Kavanaugh, who had six assists for the match, and great passes by our de- fense," Pike Central head coach Kinsey Barrett said following her team's third straight win. "We also had 15 aces as a whole." "Every match brings more improvement and bet- ter insight into what we need to work on in practice," Bar- rett added. The Lady Chargers scored the first three points of the first set – including one on an ace serve by Ka- vanaugh and one on a kill by Adams – before South Spen- cer rallied to tie the score at 5 -5. However, Pike Central scored five of the next six points – including two on ace serves by Lexie Onyett – to take a 10 -6 lead. A fter the Lady Rebels scored back-to-back points to close to within 10 -8, Pike Central tallied three straight points – including two on ace serves by Russell – to open up a 13-8 lead. South Spencer answered with a 5 -1 scoring run to close to within 14-13 but the Lady Chargers – sparked by two ace serves by Adams and one by Haylie Fulcher – would score seven of the next eight points to extend their lead to 21-14. The Lady Rebels could get no closer than 21-16 before Pike Central scored four of the next five points – with the final points coming on an ace serve by Onyett – to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of- three match. In the second set, Pike Central scored the first three points – including one on an ace serve by Kavana- ugh and one on a kill by On- yett – before South Spencer answered with a 9 -3 scoring run to take a 9 -6 lead. The Lady Rebels would extend their lead to 13-8 but three straight points by Pike Central – including one on an ace serve by Russell – closed the gap to 13-11. South Spencer would score four of the next six points to take a 17-13 lead, but the Lady Chargers took the next five points – includ- ing two on ace serves by Adams and one on a kill by Mills – to take an 18 -17 lead. The Lady Rebels rallied, scoring back-to-back points – including one on an ace serve by Ashley Will – to vault ahead 19 -18, but Pike Central surged back into the lead, scoring five straight points – including three on ace serves by Mills – to take a 23-19 lead. The two teams would trade points before Pike Cen- tral – leading 24-21 – scored the match-winning point on a mis-serve by South Spen- cer's Hailey Brown. Pike Central 2, South Knox 0 On Tuesday, Sept. 5, the Pike Central Middle School seventh grade volleyball team held off host South Knox for a 25 -17, 25 -14 vic- tory. In the second set, the Lady Chargers trailed 22- 21 before scoring three straight points – includ- ing two following serves by Shelby Meadows – to take a 24-22 lead. South Knox rallied to tie the score at 24-24 be- fore Pike Central tallied the match-winning point. "It was a nailbiter toward the end of the second set, but the team managed to come back and pull it to- gether for a great win," La- dy Chargers head coach Kinsey Barrett said. Karley Kavanaugh led Pike Central with 14 points off serve while Brailey Mills had six. Shelby Meadows and Lexie Onyett added two each while Addy Russell had one. Pike Central scored back-to-back points – including one on an ace serve by Taylor – before the Lady Rebels bounced back, tying the score at 12- 12 and 13-13 and taking a 14- 13 lead on an ace serve by Damm. A fter the Lady Chargers rallied to tie the score at 14- 14, South Spencer scored four straight points – includ- ing one on an ace serve by Kelsey Middleton – to surge ahead 18 -14. Five ace serves by Ashlyn Shoultz sparked a 6 -0 scor- ing run that vaulted Pike Central to a 20 -18 lead. However, trailing 21-19, the Lady Rebels scored six straight points – including one on an ace serve by Wil- liams – to send the match to a third, tie-breaking set. Neither team was able to build much of an advantage in the third set until Pike Central, leading 5 -4, scored six straight points – includ- ing three on ace serves by Alyna Sharp – to extend its lead to 10 -4. A fter South Spencer scored to close to within 10 - 5, the Lady Chargers scored four of the next five points – including one on an ace serve by Emily Krieg – to open up a 14-6 lead. Following back-to-back points by the Lady Reb- els – including one on an ace serve by Lydia Roberts – Pike Central scored the match-winning point on a hitting error by South Spen- cer's Laine Wertz. Shoultz led the Lady Char- gers with 11 ace serves while Welch and Sharp added sev- en and five, respectively. Taylor had three ace serves. Krieg, Reagan Craig and Tessa Vinnedge had one ace serve each. Shoultz and Welch both had a team-high 12 points off serves while Sharp had eight, Taylor four, Krieg three and Vinnedge one. "The girls had a very strong serving game," Pike Central head coach Olivia Leighty said. "We struggled mentally in the second set, but the girls came togeth- er for a strong finish in the third set." Pike Central 2, South Knox 0 Ashlyn Shoultz served up a team-high eight points while Alyna Sharp and Tessa Vinnedge added six each as Pike Central defeated host South Knox 25 -19, 25 -9 on Tuesday, Sept. 4. Trailing 8 -7 in the first set, the Lady Chargers scored eight of the next nine points to open up a 15 -9 lead. South Knox would close to within four points – at 16 -12 – but Pike Central ripped off four straight points to extend its lead to 20 -12. The Lady Chargers would lead by as many as eight points – at 24-16 – while tak- ing a 1-0 lead in the best-of- three match. In the second set, Pike Central scored three straight points to snap an early 2-2 lead. The Lady Spartans would get no clos- er than two points the rest of the match. "As a whole, the girls had an incredible serving game, with only two missed serves as a team," Lady Chargers head coach Olivia Leighty said. "They worked togeth- er, set the ball up and played aggressive at the net."
