Senior Becca Crow, who led the Lady Chargers in set-assists (16) and digs (16), accounted for a total of 6 -1/2 points with six kills and one block-assist. Pike Central jumped out to a 14-9 lead in the first set before the Lady Trojans ral- lied, scoring 10 of the next 13 points to surge ahead 19 - 17. However, the Lady Char- gers answered by scoring four straight points – includ- ing three following serves by senior Kylee Shoultz – to take a 21-19 lead. Wood Memorial would close to within one point twice – at 21-20 and 22-21 – before a kill by senior Kylie Dawson and an ace serve by junior Alexis En- glert stretched Pike Cen- tral's lead to 24-21. A fter a net serve by En- glert narrowed the score to 24-22, the Lady Chargers scored the game-winning point on a hitting error by Wood Memorial freshman Kaitlyn Jarboe to take a 1- 0 lead in the best-of-five match. In the second set, Pike Central jumped out to a 3-0 lead, scoring two points fol- lowing serves by junior Au- brie Dawson, and extended its advantage to as many as 11 points – at 20 -9. By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net There were few smiles, much less laughter, when Pike Central High School head football coach Dave Ste- phens and his staff got togeth- er early Saturday, Sept. 1, to begin game planning for their next opponent, Tell City. A fter all, the previous eve- ning, the Chargers had fallen to 0 -3 – and 0 -1 in the Pocket Athletic Conference – with a 62-2 loss to visiting Heritage Hills. That all changed, howev- er, when Chargers' special teams coordinator Jorden Froderman arrived. "He came walking into the coaches office on Saturday, and had a big ole smile," Ste- phens recalled. "I said, 'What are you smiling about? ' He goes, 'Heh, heh, heh.' I said, 'Okay, what are you laughing about.'" "We can block Tell City's punt," Froderman replied. Trailing the host Marks- men 6 -0 with 3:59 left in the third quarter, Pike Central senior Randy Powell not on- ly blocked a punt, but senior Eli Coleman recovered the loose ball in the end zone as the Chargers rallied for a 7-6 victory on Saturday, Sept. 8. "He called his shot," Ste- phens said of Froderman. "He said, 'We're going to have a certain lineup, I'm going to put this certain punt block against it.'" "Now, he didn't call the block AND the touchdown, but he did call the block," Ste- phens added. "Coach Froder- man had a great call there – and it was able to get us in the end zone." Powell said afterward that the punt block happened ex- actly as planned. "We saw they had only three linemen," Powell said. "They kind of split the line apart, and they left a hole, straight in the middle. The PAC Champion- ship was originally sched- uled to be played on Satur- day, Sept. 8, but was post- poned to Monday – and shortened from 18 holes to 9 holes – because of heavy rain that ultimate- ly made the course un- playable. "We got seven holes in and, I mean, they were miserable," Lady Char- gers head coach Jarrod Gideon said. "It was pour- ing down rain. It got to the point where it was raining so hard you couldn't see, and there was puddling on the greens, so we had to kind of call it." "But it was for the bet- ter," Gideon added. "To- day was a beautiful day to play." The Pike Central High School boys' tennis team picked up its first win of the season with a 4-0 vic- tory over visiting South Knox on Tuesday, Sept. 4, before dropping a 4-1 loss to visiting Southridge on Wednesday, Sept. 5.
