In a second-round singles match, Eli Arnold lost 6 -1. In second-round doubles matches, Dietrich Dunigan and Carter Blackwell lost 6 - 1 and J.J. Belmore and Park- er Knust lost 6 -2. "We have started off with two losses," said Chargers head coach Phil Knust. "We have a young group of sixth graders and below this year. We had some good wins in our first match with some solid wins from Eli Arnold and Nolan Bailey. J.J. Bel- more had a great match in our first match of the sea- son but came up a little short at 8 -6." "We have some new play- ers this year also that are playing for the first time and are improving with each practice and match, as well as the rest of the team," Knust added. Pike Central will host South Knox on Tuesday, Sept. 11, starting at 5:30 p.m. Junior Shelby Vaughn scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick with three minutes left in over- time to lift the Pike Cen- tral High School girls' soc- cer team to a 3-2 victory over host South Spencer on Tues- day, Aug. 28. With the win, Pike Cen- tral improved to 2-3-1 over- all, including 1-0 -1 in the Pocket Athletic Conference. Vaughn and senior Kelsey Barrett both scored goals during the first half, giving the Lady Chargers a 2-1 half- time lead. "Regular time ended with the score being 2-2, so we went to overtime because it was a conference game," Pike Central head coach Eric McCord said. "During the second half of over- time, there was a foul in the 18 -yard box, so we got a pen- alty kick." "Overall, we played a good game with more communi- cation than we have heard all season," McCord add- ed. "Like always, there are skills and techniques we can improve on." McCord said that he was especially pleased with the play of junior goalie Jenna Horrall. "As always, Jenna played a strong game, coming off the line, continuously stop- ping would-be goals by div- ing on top of the ball," Mc- Cord said. "Despite being taken off the field due to a bloody nose, she came back and continued to play just as hard as before. All the ladies played a great game and I'm proud of all of them." Boonville 2, Pike Central 0 On Thursday, Aug. 30, the Lady Chargers dropped a 2- 0 loss to visiting Boonville. "We played well, and one of the goals was an unfortu- nate own-goal deflection," McCord said. "Boonville had a strong defense and we struggled to crack it open. We still have opportunities to score, but not like some of our other games. We will be making changes to our offense before the Prince- ton game to help us against teams with strong defenses. We were also down one of our starting defenders due to injury." Pike Central will travel to Princeton on Thursday, Sept. 6, before returning home to host South Knox on Tuesday, Sept. 11.
