B-2 Sports Wednesday, September 5, 2018 The Press-Dispatch from the left crossed the face of the goal before slip- ping just past the right up- right by less than one foot. With the score still tied at 0 -0 with a little more than three minutes left in the first half, an indirect kick by Scott from the top of the 18 -yard box was knocked up and over the crossbar by a leaping Matthews. Shortly after Regis' goal snapped the scoreless tie, Matthews recorded anoth- er save on a shot by Char- gers senior Hayden Kabrick, off a cross from senior Jacob Vest. Matthews had two more punch saves during the sec- ond half – one in the sec- ond half's first minute on a throw-in by Chargers se- nior Christian Benson and the second with a little over 10 minutes remaining in the contest on a shot by Scott. "I thought we dominat- ed possession and created a lot of chances all through- out the game," Western said. "We had a couple of good op- portunities off of Christian Benson throw-ins. Austin Holder and Hunter Cape- hart each had a good look that went just wide of the post, and Ethan Scott had a free kick in the first half and a long left-footed shot in the second half that the Princ- eton goalie, Braden Mat- thews, had great saves on." "We knew he was real- ly good and it would take a lot of shots to get one past him," Western added. "Un- fortunately, we weren't able to get the win against a good sectional opponent, but I am proud of how the boys bat- tled all game." Junior Noah Whann re- corded a total of eight saves in goal for the Chargers. "Our defense was a lit- tle bit shaky the first 10 minutes or so, and it hurt us, but once we settled in, we were really good in the back," Western said. "Gabe Caldwell and Garrett Boyd in particular did a great job." Pike Central 3, Boonville 1 A pair of goals by senior Hayden Kabrick and one by junior Ethan Scott boosted the Chargers to a 3-1 come- from-behind victory over visiting Boonville on Thurs- day, Aug. 30. Scott and senior Chris- tian Benson both had one assist, by junior goalie Noah Whann recorded 12 saves. "This game was a big test against a really good Boon- ville team," Western said. "We gave up an early goal in the first half. To come out the second half, we really at- tacked as a team and created plenty of chances." "With about 10 minutes to play, Ethan Scott scored the game-tying goal on a free kick," Western added. "Hayden Kabrick scored two more goals to secure the win. The way the team battled even when things weren't going our way was really impressive. We showed we can be a tough group and I'm really proud of our effort." Pike Central 6, South Spencer 0 Junior Ethan Scott net- ted three goals to lead the Chargers to a 6 -0 victory over host South Spencer on Tuesday, Aug. 28. Senior Austin Holder add- ed two goals while sopho- more Connor Young had one as Pike Central improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the Pocket Athletic Conference. Senior Hayden Kabrick had two assists while Scott, Young, senior Christian Ben- son, senior Connor Gaines and junior Carson Johnson added one each. Junior Noah Whann, meanwhile, had eight saves in goal for the Chargers. "Having not played in a week, it was important we came out and played well in a big conference game," Western said. "The boys were ready and came out re- ally strong and were able to put away three goals in the first 15 minutes." "Ethan Scott was excel- lent tonight, scoring a hat trick, and Austin Holder added two goals," Western added. "The defense did a great job being part of the attack all night, Hayden Kabrick and Jacob Vest and Connor Gaines did a great job creating chances for us out of the middle." Senior Jackson Holstein had 11 saves for South Spen- cer, which fell to 0 -6 overall and 0 -2 in the PAC. Pike Central, which played at South Knox on Tuesday, Sept. 4, will re- turn home to host North Posey on Thursday, Sept. 6, at 6 p.m. One week later, on Thursday, Sept. 13, the Chargers will then travel to Heritage Hills.
