The Press-Dispatch Sports Wednesday, September 5, 2018 B- 5 Then, after Forest Park scored to pull to within 21- 17, the Lady Chargers rolled off four straight points – in- cluding three following serves by Crow – to win the first set 25 -17. In the second set, the Lady Rangers scored four straight points to snap a 1-1 tie and extended their lead to 15 -6. Pike Central would close to within five points twice – at 19 -14 and 21-16 – before Forest Park scored four straight points to tie the match at 1-1. Trailing 4-3 in the third set, the Lady Chargers tal- lied seven of the next nine points – including three following serves by Kaila Lamey and one following serves by Crow and Kylie Dawson – to take a 10 -6 lead. The Lady Rangers would close to within two points three times – at 10 -8, 11- 9 and 12-10 – before Pike Central scored five straight points, including four follow- ing serves by Taylor Lamey, to extend its lead to 17-10. Forest Park would answer with a 5 -0 run of its own, cut- ting the Lady Chargers' lead to 17-15, but Pike Central scored four straight points – including two on kills by Kylie Dawson and one by ju- nior Karsyn Pipes – to take a 21-15 lead. The Lady Rangers could get no closer than three points the rest of the set. In the fourth set, Forest Park, after falling behind 2-1, scored three straight points to take the lead, which the Lady Rangers ex- tended to five points, at 12-7. That lead proved short- lived, however, as Pike Cen- tral scored 15 of the next 17 points – including five fol- lowing serves by Kylie Daw- son and four each following serves by Kaila Lamey and Crow – to take a 22-14 advan- tage. "We were just finding our holes, making them work, knowing what was open," Chestnut said. "Our sideline girls that were on the bench were keeping a lookout, making sure they were see- ing what was open, letting their teammates out on the court know. And that's real- ly big. Just because they're on the bench doesn't mean they're out of the game. So we need that from every- body. We need everybody to be in the game and be ready." "Whenever we get down, we kind of huddle togeth- er and we talk to each oth- er," Crow added. "We ask, 'What's going on? ' We try to help each other pick out points on what should be fixed and stuff, and I think that just kind of gives us more confidence, know- ing that our teammates are there to back us up." Following back-to-back points that pulled Forest Park to within 22-16, the Lady Chargers scored two of the next three points – including one on a dink by Crow – to extend their lead to 24-17, setting the stage for the match's thrilling conclusion. "It felt pretty good," Crow said of the win. "I really wanted to win tonight." Forest Park slipped to 2- 8 overall and 1-2 in the PAC with the loss. Chestnut, who described the victory as a "very, very big win," admitted that she was a little concerned about fatigue being a factor enter- ing the match. "And possibly them being a little down on themselves, just because we fought so hard on Monday at Reitz," Chestnut explained. "But they pulled it out. They did very well. I couldn't be any prouder of them. Their en- ergy was there. Their fight was there. Their hustle was there. That's all we wanted from them, and they showed it tonight." Crow gave Chestnut and assistant coach Ti- na Vinnedge credit for the team's ability to ward off fa- tigue. "That's why we practice hard in practice," Crow said. "Our coaches make practice 10 times harder than what a game really should be, so I think that helps us stay ac- tive on the court." Chestnut and Crow also praised the team's serving. For the match, Pike Central committed just 12 errors on 96 serve attempts, an 87.8 percent average, while scor- ing 51 service points, includ- ing 12 on aces – four by Tay- lor Lamey, three by Crow, two each by Kylie Dawson and Kaila Lamey and one by junior Audrey Keepes. "I think that might have been our best serving game, actually," Crow said. "It feels good knowing that you can get the ball over and in and make it harder for the other team to get it back." "I don't think we could have done it without our serving," Chestnut said. "Getting on those runs and getting a few points ahead, to get a cushion, really worked in our favor. Push- ing the serve back, get- ting their setter off the net, which gets their hitters off the net, which gives us more time to set up, was key." Keepes and Taylor Lamey both had seven kills while Pipes had five. Keepes al- so had two blocks and one block-assist. Crow had one block and one block-assist, while Kylie Dawson and Jenkins had one block-as- sist each. Kylie Dawson led the La- dy Chargers in digs with 18, followed by Keepes (17), Crow (16), Kaila Lamey and Pipes (13 each) and senior Kylee Shoultz (11). In the junior varsity match, sophomore Kenzie Powell had four kills while sophomore Addie John- son and freshman Erika Vinnedge added two each to lead Pike Central to a 25 - 20, 25 -23 victory.
