The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, August 22, 2018 C-1 CHURCH Submit church items: Call: 812-354-8500 Email: news@pressdispatch.net or bring in a hard copy: 820 E. Poplar Street, Petersburg Have you ever noticed the wording of the majestic statement with which the Bi- ble opens? "In the beginning God created the heav- en and the earth" (Gen. 1:1). It does not say that God created "the uni- verse," but "the heaven" and "the earth." This is because God had a special pur- pose for the earth quite distinct from His purpose for the rest of the universe. This purpose concerning the earth and the na- tions to dwell upon it is progressively re- vealed in the Scriptures. We look forward to its glorious consummation when "the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea" — when the Christ who was crucified here shall come into His right, reigning as King of kings and Lord of lords. But God also had a very special purpose concerning heaven which He kept hidden in His own heart of love until man's sin and re- bellion had reached their climax. Then He stooped down, saved the "chief of sinners" and used him to make known the wondrous secret of His purpose to offer to sinners ev- erywhere, salvation by grace through faith alone, reconciling them to Himself in one body by the cross and giving them a present position and a future prospect in the high- est heavens. God's purpose concerning the earth and Christ's reign upon it is the subject of proph- ecy (Luke 1:68 -76), His purpose concerning heaven and our exaltation there with Christ is the subject of "the mystery" (Eph. 2:4- 10 ; 3:1-4). Into these two great subjects the Scriptures are basically divided. We played and sang at Washington Nursing Center last Tuesday evening and then at Em- erald House on Thursday evening. One of our great friends has taken a bad fall and is in hos- pital with a head injury. We missed him sitting behind us cheering us along and giving en- couragement with his smiles and good nature. One thing I have learned by being friends with our elders in health care facilities is life isn't over until God says come home. They are a wealth of knowledge and talents and they still enjoy sharing them with you if you will only give them the chance. They choose hap- piness and contentment over misery and ag- ony. They love being alive even though they know one day they will make a final journey to a blissful home in heaven so most of them are just happy to see you. Take the opportunity to visit at a health care facility and be blessed by the residents there. Knowing that this world isn't the only home we will have and not one of us knows when our days are over, it behooves us to take care of our bodies the best we can. God has supplied the physicians of this world with the knowl- edge and skills to make our life more man- ageable and healthy. There are many tests and procedures which can show them how to make your life more pleasant and maybe even longer. I had two such tests this week and I must tell you that the Colonoscopy and endoscopy was minor compared to the dread of them. I have to admit that getting ready for them was a little unhandy and takes a bit of discipline to keep from eating while you are supposed to be fasting. My doctor has been able to advise me to take an over the counter medicine that has improved my life. Bottom line is take of your- self and live a good life while it can be enjoyed. Stam Continued on page 2 There is no book that has influenced America like the Bible. It is loved and read by millions throughout the world. The Bible remains the world's best-sell- ing book. Strangely, it never appears on the bestseller list, but no book has sold as many copies. At least 57% of the American people read it. The interest in reading the Bible re- mains as strong as ever. There are more than 60 Bible versions in the English language. Today, there are study Bibles, paraphrases, new translations and formats every few years. The two most popular versions are the New International Version and the King James Version. A pop- ular paraphrase, in everyday language, is the Living Bible. One can read through the Bible each year by spending about 20 min- utes a day reading. According to the American Bible Society, the complete Bible has been published in 341 languages and the New Testament in 822. At least one book of the Bible is avail- able in 2,092 of the world's estimated 6,000 language dia- lects. There is a new bat- tle over the Bible as liberal theologians seek to re-engineer society and to make the Bible gender free and politically cor- rect. This is a dan- gerous trend and should be opposed by Christian people. The Bible is very clear regarding issues like abortion, homosex- uality and co-habitation. Many seeker sen- sitive pastors want sin to be less sinful and make it easy for church members to fit in- to many of the evils in our culture. All true evangelicals believe the Bible makes a clear distinction between men and women. Chris- tians need to stand firm against all efforts to change the Word of God. Our Sunday scripture lesson covered the question of who will dwell in heaven. To start with God will be on the throne and always will be. Jesus will be at God's right hand and will be pleading to the Father for us and our sins. We will be in heaven too if we seek the for- giveness of Jesus and accept the grace of God. Backbiters and haters of mankind have to repent and accept if they desire a home in heaven. If we sin then we should claim our sin and repent of it. Sad to say but no one makes you sin it is your responsibility to do what you should and not anyone else's. Heaven is ours but we have to want it bad enough to stayed in God's good grace. Never forget that God has given you today so make the most of it and be a blessing to someone. Come Sunday as we contin- ue our series on Armour of God, Put "Em" Up. "I treasure your word in my heart, so that I may not sin against you" (Psalm 119:11). Memorizing scripture gives you a better under- standing of the Bible and of the way God wants you to live. The Bible says that you are to hide His Word in your heart, and you do this by reading, studying and in- wardly digesting what God has to say. Intimately knowing Scrip- ture helps you find God's purpose in your life, because it is ready and on the tip of your tongue when you face temptation or trials. The verses you know come back to you and remind you to call on God. They help you give Him control and they com- fort you. If at any time you have no church to attend, feel free to join us for services. Your presence will be greatly ap- preciated and I am sure you will receive God blessings.
