Morganton Festival is Sept. 7-8, 2018 The American Legion World Series adds food drive to Senior Citizens Day The fi rst day of the annual American Legion World Series (ALWS) is traditionally Senior Citizens Day and all attendees 55 and older can watch all four games of the day at no charge. For 2018, the local ALWS planning committee has added a new element to the day – a food and toiletries collection for the Leona Neal Senior Center, which assists senior citizens in need of food. Nutrition Coordinator Heather Ledbetter says, "The need in the community is consistent without much change for the time of year. We have more requests than we can fi ll and the community's help will be much appreciated. Our pantry is supported solely by donations and there are times when little to no donations come in." The Senior Center, operated by the Cleveland County Council on Aging, is located at 100 T.R. Harris Drive in Shelby. Center offerings for adults 55 and older include exercise classes, a computer lab, legal aid and screening for blood pressure and blood sugar. Also, seniors can receive assistance from the food pantry once a month. Meals served in the Center are a separate service from the food pantry and diners pay for those meals. The goal of the Center is to improve the quality of life of the County's older adults. Center hours are 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday – Thursday and 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. Friday. The Center is closed on weekends. The phone number for the Center is 704-482-3488. The 2018 ALWS opens Thursday, Aug. 16, at Shelby High School's Keeter Stadium; the six-day tournament runs through Tuesday, Aug. 21. The fi rst game on Aug. 16 is at 10:00 a.m. and the gates and Ticket Offi ce will open at 8:00 a.m. Senior citizens are admitted free but still need to request a ticket at the Ticket Offi ce. The drop-off point for non-perishable food items and toiletries will be designated containers outside the front gate. The Senior Center will be responsible for securing the items at the end of the day. "The ALWS benefi ts our community in various ways," says Eddie Holbrook, chairman of the local ALWS committee. "When the Center asked about the possibility of the food and toiletries drive, it was easy for us to endorse the idea. We applaud the Center's work in Cleveland County."
