Photo by Jeff Melton Women Veterans to be Major Focus of Military Appreciation Day during American Legion World Series Military Appreciation Day during the 2018 American Legion World Series (ALWS), Saturday, Aug. 18, will include a Salute to Women Veterans between the second and third games of the day as part of the traditional Veterans March. Sponsored by USAA, the day includes three games that will be open to veterans and active military personnel at no cost. The games are scheduled for 1:00, 4:00 and 7:30 PM. The United States has more than 200,000 women serving in the fi ve branches of military service, the reserves and the National Guard, and women veterans total nearly 2 million. Two female U.S. Senators are military veterans: Joni Ernst of Iowa and Tammy Duckworth of Illinois; two female U.S. Representatives are military veterans: Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii and Martha McSally of Arizona. Army veteran Denise Rohan is the current National Commander of The American Legion. Lindsay Gutierrez, an Air Force veteran who served during Desert Storm and the reigning Ms. Veteran America, will participate, also. The American Legion Riders will ride onto Veterans Field prior to the fi rst game of the day and be formally recognized. The riders make the Legacy Run each August to fund scholarships for children who meet certain criteria. The Riders who attend the ALWS will be stopping by on their way to The American Legion National Convention in Minneapolis. Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient Army Medic James McCloughan, a Vietnam War veteran, will be honored between the fi rst and second games of the day. McCloughan was credited with saving the lives of 10 soldiers from his company and a Vietnamese interpreter during May 13-15, 1969; some of his rescue efforts were carried out after he was wounded. He received two Purple Hearts for his two wounds and a Bronze Star Medal with "V" device. All veterans participating on Military Appreciation Day will receive a commemorative cap and baseball. "Demonstrating our appreciation for the service of veterans and active military personnel has always been important to us," says local ALWS Committee Chairman Eddie Holbrook. "The American Legion promotes more programs than youth baseball and is known for its advocacy of military personnel and their families. We are thrilled that we can honor these men and women on this specifi c day."
