B-2 Sports Wednesday, April 25, 2018 The Press-Dispatch Senior first baseman Ava Little belted a two-run homerun to erase a 4-3 defi- cit as Princeton rallied for a 6 -4 victory over visiting Pike Central in varsity softball ac- tion on Tuesday, April 17. The Lady Chargers, who fell to 3-4, had scored twice in the top of the fifth inning – overcoming a 3-2 deficit – when senior leftfielder Jor- dan Montgomery scored on an error and senior first baseman Demi Croak scored on a wild pitch. However, after senior shortstop Jade Malone reached base with a two-out single in the bottom of the fifth, Little belted a two-ball, one-strike pitch from senior Peyton Sorgius over the cen- terfield fence. "The two times before that, we struck the girl out," Pike Central head coach Rick Weisman said. "It was kind of low and away. I don't know if Peyton missed her spot, or one got away, but that's going to happen." The Lady Tigers had a to- tal of eight hits in the game, including four for extra bas- es – Little's homerun and doubles by senior center- fielder Alyssa Bowers, fresh- man second baseman Jade Christy and senior second baseman Tori Matthews. Pike Central, which fell to 3-4, collected 10 hits, but only two for extra bases – a double by freshman catch- er Addy Johnson and a so- lo homerun by senior short- stop Audra Stone. "We've got to get quick- er, maybe, in the outfield," Weisman said. "I think there's been two of our loss- es where we've out-hit teams – and we're getting singles but they're getting doubles. So we've got to do some- thing there to stop that, or we've just got to re-position them in the outfield to kind of take that away." Croak went 3-for-4 and scored one run. Stone went 2-for-4 with a homerun, while Johnson went 2-for-3. On the mound, Sorgius went the distance for the Lady Chargers, allowing six runs – all of which were earned – on eight hits and striking out five. In the junior varsity game, Pike Central sopho- more pitcher Alizé Padgett starred both on the mound and at the plate, shutting Princeton out on four hits and striking out five while going 3-for-4, scoring three runs and driving in five – in- cluding two on a first-inning homerun – as the Lady Char- gers won 15 -0. Freshman third baseman Mallory Hickey went 2-for-3, inches; Stone in the 100 -me- ter dash with a season-best time of 13.59 seconds; and Young in the 100 -meter hur- dles with a time of 18.34 sec- onds. As a team, Pike Central scored 68 points. Mount Ver- non (Posey) was first with 105 points while Heritage Hills finished second with 89 points. Tecumseh was fourth with 24 points, followed by Wood Memorial (21 points). The Lady Chargers, which had a meet at Wash- ington scheduled on Mon- day, April 23, will compete in the Pioneer Relays at Boon- ville on Monday, April 30.
