This Sunday's sermon will be titled "The Savior's Song." Scripture reading from Luke 1:76 -79. Theme statement: In this scripture text, we listen to the prophetic song sung by Zechariah about his son, John the Baptist. Zechari- ah was offering incense to God in the Temple as an act of worship and as an appeal to God for the forgiveness of sins of his people. When we pray, as Zechariah and Elisa- beth did, we must be open to how God intends to answer our prayers. We have three ways God answered the prayers of his people: 1. Desiring God's desires. 2. Praying with expectan- cy. 3. Being watchful. Leon Pomeroy, Pastor PETERSBURG FREE METHODIST CHURCH 202 E. Sunday morning worship service at 10 a.m., with Sun- day school classes at 10 :45 a.m.; Every other Tuesday night, prayer at 7 p.m. So many have become so unthankful as we enter a thankful time. We may not be what we once were, but we are still the most blessed nation today. We need to be thankful that we live in a country where we can wor- ship God in total freedom, have our own families, jobs, homes, automobiles and we can have our own choices in elections and freely voice our opinions. However, we have an undercurrent in this country trying to bring great divisions to fulfill their own agendas. I am going to be so greatly thankful for what I have this Thanksgiv- ing day and every day there- after. Are you truly thank- ful? Pray for your country, our president and government, your local government, our soldiers and all pastors. Re- member to pray for the sick and afflicted, and those in the nursing homes and hos- pitals. Be a friend to your neigh- bors, co-workers, any with whom you come into con- tact. To have a friend, you need to be a friend. Jesus said what you give out is what you will receive back. May you find peace and joy in your life this week. God's servant and friend to humanity, George Bruce, Pastor MAIN STREET PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 10th and Main Streets, Petersburg 812-354-6844 Sunday worship 10 :30 a.m.; Youth group Monday evening at 6 p.m. Come vis- it us, our doors are always open to you. The long view of Advent Advent is about preparing not only for Christmas but al- so for Jesus' return. Accord- ing to Scripture, that won't be the calm, silent scene de- scribed in Christmas carols. In 1928, Dietrich Bon- hoeffer preached: "It is very remarkable that we face the thought that God is com- ing so calmly, whereas pre- viously peoples trembled at the day of God...We have be- come so accustomed to the idea of divine love and of God's coming at Christ, as that we no longer feel the shiver of fear that God's coming should arouse in us. We [forget] the seri- ous aspect, that the God of the world draws near to the people of our little earth and lays claim to us." God is love; we'll be in good hands at the end of time. But during Advent, also be in awe of God. Em- brace a reverent fear of the Lord that reminds you how profound it is that God chooses again and again to draw near and lay claim to you.
