Poplar Street, Petersburg Another secondhand club previously owned by John Burns was instru- mental in acing Hole No. 5/14 from the red tees during Senior Men's Golf League action on Thurs- day, July 13, at the Prides Creek Golf Course. Earlier this spring, Burns brought a bag full of surplus clubs to Prides Creek to sell, and two of those clubs have since been used to score a hole- in-one. Larry Eck scored an ace on Hole No. 5/14 on Saturday, June 24, with a used club he purchased from Burns. And on Thursday, July 13, Ross Williams aced Hole No. 5/14 while playing in the Senior Men's League with another of Burns' clubs. Williams' hole-in-one was witnessed by team- mates Heath Briggaman, John Clinard, Jim Cox and Max Elliott. The lucky stroke helped the team to a 7-under-par score of 29 for the nine holes played, but it still was not good enough to win this day. A 9 -under-par score of 27 for nine holes was reg- istered by the team of Steve Arnold, Larry Barr, Mike Barrett, John Kraft and Ryan Tolbert and was the winning team effort for this day. Twenty-nine players began scramble play and the early losers headed to Burns' house to buy any other used clubs that he may not be able to score with yet, because others are really using them to their advantage. Just ask Larry Eck or Ross Wil- liams – both now have their names on the Prides Creek 'Hole in One" list with Burns' used clubs. New players are try- ing the nine-hole scram- ble format at the Prides Creek Golf Course each week, and men of all ag- es are welcome to join the friendly competition on Thursdays at 10 a.m. The Pike Central High School cheerleaders' travel and home teams had a very successful week while at- tending a National Cheerleaders Asso- ciation (NCA) camp at Vincennes Uni- versity from Monday, July 10, through Thursday, July 13, during which they put in 12-hour days while learning cheers, chants, stunting and dances. The Pike Central cheerleaders com- peted in NCA Game Day on Thursday, July 13, and won the Top Team 2017 trophy. They also received a spirit stick each day, five Superior blue rib- bons, one Excellent red ribbon on eval- uations, and the Stunt S.A.F.E. Award. In addition, the Pike Central cheer- leaders received their NFHS squad credentialing and a bid to Nationals. One of the team's seniors, Kayla Sanders, won the Individual Leader- ship Award for the whole camp. A to- tal of seven Pike Central cheerlead- ers – Emily Brasher, Miki Feldpaus- ch, Alexis Huff, Jenna Meyer, Kayla Sanders, Hallee Stephens and Abigail Sutt – were nominated for All-Amer- ican honors. Head coach for the Pike Central High School cheerleaders is Jamie McKinney. Jennifer Ficklin and Des- tinee McKinney serve as assistant coaches. During the 2017-18 school year, the Pike Central High School cheerlead- ers will be cheering for all junior var- sity and varsity football games, all ju- nior varsity and varsity boys' basket- ball games, and all varsity girls' bas- ketball games. The new classifications are based on enrollment figures – the totals of boys and girls in grades 9 -12 – submitted by the schools to the Indiana Department of Education in March. Sectional groupings for both sports will be an- nounced in late August fol- lowing approval of the IH- SA A Executive Commit- tee. Pike Central High School, which ranked 188th with an enrollment of 567 students in grades 9 -12 during 2015 -2016 and 2016 -2017, will remain in Class 3A in both baseball and softball in 2017-18 and 2018 -19 with an enrollment of 588. In baseball, Jasper moved up from Class 3A to Class 4A, while South- ridge dropped from Class 3A to Class 2A, leaving four schools – Pike Cen- tral, Princeton, Vincennes Lincoln and Washington – that competed in Class 3A's Sectional 31 the past two seasons. Southridge also dropped from Class 3A to Class 2A in softball, leaving five schools – Pike Central, Jas- per, Princeton, Vincennes Lincoln and Washington – that competed in Class 3A's Sectional 31 the past two seasons. In addition, the Gibson Southern High School soft- ball team – after winning back-to-back regional ti- tles in 2015 -2016 and 2016 - 2017 – will remain in Class 4A due to the Tournament Success Factor points the Lady Titans have accumu- lated over the past two sea- sons. Meanwhile, the Tecum- seh High School softball Heartland Half Marathon giving cash prizes This year's Heartland Half Marathon prepara- tions are underway as the sixth annual event is sched- uled to take place during Labor Day Weekend on Saturday, Sept. 2. The events will once again in- clude a half marathon, 5K, and team challenge, along with cash prizes for the top three finishers in both male and female divisions for the half marathon. The races will begin at 7:30 a.m. in the shadow of the Jasper Train Depot in Jasper, along the banks of the Patoka River, and will finish in the shade along the same river just a stone's throw away. This scenic course takes half marathon runners along a hilly route through commercial and residen- tial neighborhoods with challenging peaks midway through the race. The 5K starts and ends in the same location as the half mar- athon, but splits to take a different course close to the start of the race. The routes once again merge during the last leg of the race, which take runners along the scenic Jasper Riv- erwalk. The team challenge is a relay comprised of a four-person team and fol- lows the same course as the Heartland Half Mar- athon. The first runner in the relay will travel 3.8 miles, then pass along his/ her timing chip to the sec- ond runner. The second runner will then run 4.05 miles and pass along the chip. The third runner will run 2.5 miles, and final run- ner finishes off with the re- maining 2.75 miles. The registration fee for the half marathon is $ 60 if registered by August 13. A fter August 13, cost for the half marathon is $70. The 5K and team challenge registration fee is $25 per person. Pre-registrants will re- ceive a technical shirt, and the first 500 half marathon- ers to preregister will also receive a special race gift. Registration can be com- pleted online at raceros- ter.com or at heartland-
