I nterior designer Kristin Paton doesn't need to say that she's just come off a big travel year, including trips to Italy, Paris, and England, as it is obvious from the pieces in her recently opened home store in Cambridge. A delicate pagoda birdcage shares space with a trio of curious monkeys and vintage wine barrels repurposed into stools. Located on a pretty, quiet street a few blocks from Harvard Square, the chic store is stocked with items hand- picked from vintage stores and flea markets in Paris, London, and the US. "I try to focus on what designers might need at the last minute, or on what locals are looking for," says Paton. To this end Paton, along with VP of retail and product development Peter Griglik, her longtime friend, has collected pieces such as throw pillows and sleek lacquer candlesticks. A Marimekko pillow. Renowned for its distinctive prints and vibrant colors, Finnish textile and clothing company Marimekko has just opened a new store on Newbury Street. The 60-year-old company revolutionized the textile industry with its unconventional patterns, and its fresh take on fashion and design has since been translated into home décor, accessories, and fashion. Marimekko was first introduced into the US in 1959 through Design Research in Cambridge, and the brand has had a stand-alone store there on Huron Avenue since 2006. When looking to expand, the company jumped at the chance to occupy a historic 3,200-square-foot classic brownstone in the style center of Boston. The store houses Marimekko's beautiful collection of colorful clothing and home furnishings, including playful duvet covers and pillows, and vibrant A-line dresses with colorful patterns. 140 Newbury St., 617-247-2500; marimekko.com SieMatic's ZeroMatic SelectSurfaces in Lotus White. a flawless finish SIEMATIC INTRODUCES ZEROMATIC, ITS NEWEST LINE OF PREMIUM KITCHEN CABINETRY.
