Reader usability on race day helped this section win out over competitors. Second place Steel: Forging a future Staff The Times (Munster) Comments: Clearly a labor of love for the community you serve. Tons of in-depth reporting. Great section for a community that lives and breathes steel. Third place BCS National Championship Staff The Journal Gazette (Fort Wayne) Comments: Solid entry as sports championship sections go. Best Community Service/Category 29 First place Are our children any safer? Virginia Black South Bend Tribune Comments: Black's series of articles on child abuse effectively used a combination of personal stories and news reporting to raise awareness. Each story was compelling, focused and heart-wrenching. Second place Focus: Business and Retail, Education and Health Staff The Journal Gazette (Fort Wayne) Comments: This paper's effort to profile local businesses and give readers valuable information concerning hiring is a great approach to dealing with high unemployment numbers. Rather than simply report dire unemployment numbers, the paper combined copy and great photography to effectively create a tool to help job-seekers. Third place Children in peril Marisa Kwiatkowski The Times (Munster) Comments: This paper's year-long series examined a broad range of issues affecting Indiana children. Kwiatkowski's reporting and the paper's commitment to such an extended series on this important topic is to be commended. Best Newspaper Design/Category 30 First place Staff Evansville Courier & Press Comments: The front pages were engaging, with skyboxes that made each paper look like it had lots of great content inside yet didn't give the front pages a cluttered look. Second place Staff The Indianapolis Star Comments: Front pages offered lots of information about the content inside, and the section fronts draw readers in.
