Story finalists Story of the Year finalists Division 1 A celebration of survival Amanda Matlock The Times-Post (Pendleton) Comments: Good quotes, great storytelling and sound presentation with chronological snippets. Reading this piece brought tears to my eyes. Very well-done. See Page 16 for story Division 2 Remembering the March 2, 2012, tornado Stephanie Taylor Ferriell, Marcia Walker & Kate Wehlann The Salem Leader Comments: Powerful opening and emotional throughout. The reporter does an excellent job of recapping the year and telling the stories of the families affected by the tornado. See Page 22 for story Division 3 Franklin County auditor troubles James Sprague Connersville News-Examiner Comments: Reporter does a great job fulfilling watchdog role over local government. In a situation where direct answers were obviously difficult to come by, the reporter stuck to the cause and, seemingly, brought needed resolution for the community. Great example of what our community newspapers should be doing more of. See Page 31 for story Division 4 Homelessness in Richmond Bill Engle Palladium-Item (Richmond) Comments: Fantastic story! Great writing and the many moving voices bring this story to life. See Page 40 for story Division 6 Story of survival Vanessa Renderman The Times (Munster) Comments: "Story of Survival" is memorable, a touching story of how five siblings survived horrific abuse and reunited. It is not only an amazing story, but it was told in such a way that the reader clings on until the last word. See Page 61 for story Page 6
