B-4 The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, April 10, 2013 Tech Solutions: Taking your computer in for service Pike Co. SWCD poster contest The Pike County Soil and Water Conservation District poster contest is going on now, with judging and awards presented during the upcoming Conservation Stewardship Week in May. Following with the 2013 Stewardship Week theme, posters are to be centered around what the phrase Where does your water shed? means to the kids and should include those words somewhere in their art work. The theme was selected by the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) and handed down through the states to the county level. Poster winners from the Pike County contest will be sent to the Indiana state contest and those winners from the state will move on to the national level, with each competition handing out cash prizes. Flyers were distributed throughout the elementary schools in the county in By Scott A. Hartley Technology Columnist She brought her computer in and placed it on our check-in counter. With a hint of frustration in her voice, she said, This thing isnt working right. What seems to be the problem with it? I curiously asked. I dont know. It just doesnt do what I try to get it to do. Although Im smiling on the outside, I cringe on the inside because I know its going to be a challenge obtaining the necessary information I need to accurately understand and diagnose my clients computer issue. Its not really the clients fault. She like all of us expects her computer to just work. When it doesnt, irritation and frustration set in. And its very tempting to call a professional and simply say, It doesnt work. Just fix it! Computer problems are as varied and complex as a physical malady you may experience. When you go to mid-March. The contest is broken down into three divisions and will follow the NACD rules and regulations. Divisions: K-first grade, second-third and fourth-fifth will compete for cash prizes sponsored by the SWCD and local agricultural businesses. Parents are asked to remind their kids about the due date, which is Wednesday, April 24. Students can either turn them into the teachers on Wednesday morning or take them to the SWCD office no later than close of business on April 24. For a list of complete rules, to get a copy of the required entry form or to get some information on helpful websites, contact SWCD office at 354-6120, ext. 3, during office hours or by email at stephanie. burkemper@in.nacdnet. net. There are certain requirements for the winning posters to be eligible to attend State Competition. your family physician with an illness, you wisely dont just tell them, Im not feeling well and leave it at that. You might needlessly end up with a few surgeries and expensive medical bills (or at best, a few needle sticks that you really dont enjoy!) Rather, you tell the nurse or doctor the symptoms youre experiencing, how long theyve been bothering you, and exactly where it hurts. This allows them to make a quicker diagnosis and provide the right treatment for your condition. You can help your computer technician provide faster service and a more accurate solution to your computer problem by providing as much detailed information as possible when you reach out to them with an issue. Here are some tips for important information to share when describing a computer problem: Describe as best as you can what the problem is. Did you receive an er- ror message? If so, when did it appear? What was the exact wording of the error message (either take a picture or write out word for word what it says)? When did the problem first occur? Does it occur only when you perform a particular action? Does the problem or error message happen every time? What were you doing when you experienced the problem? What programs did you have open? Have you installed any new software programs or software updates? If you believe your computer is running slow, does your computer take a long time to load to the desktop with all the icons? Does it only run slow when pulling up websites? Or does it also run slow when opening up a program like Microsoft Word? Does the problem continue after restarting your computer? If youre experiencing problems with your Internet, have you rebooted your modem and router? Do you have other computers in your house/ business that are having the same Internet problems? Your computer technician truly desires to resolve your computer problems as quickly as possible. By being as detailed, descriptive and specific as you can, youll make your PC techs job easier, get faster service and save money on the repairs.
