B-1 Wednesday, April 10, 2013 E-Mail Sports Items to: sports@pressdispatch.net Sports Tidbits From the Mini Mac By Mike Johansen W inter sports are supposedly officially over. However, until this past weekends weather, you could not prove it through that aspect. Spring has not sprung when you go to a softball game and it is 42 degrees out, with all the fans who braved the cold bundled up, except for a few very silly kids without jackets. I guess their craving for sun and warmth has gone to their heads and they just shed their protective outer gear because the cold had frozen their brains and nerve ends to the point that they did not feel the freezing weather. It is no wonder the young have a lot more colds and flu, when you see them prancing around in 3545 degree weather in shorts and shirt, or jeans and shirt, and no jackets and protective head gear. I know if I did that, my mother would have shoved me out in the snow until I would face the reality that a coat in cold weather is a necessity for good health (or she and my dad would have blistered my back side for being so stupid). The dress I see some kids and adults in when it is cold leaves me to wonder if their brains were not frozen solid long ago!!! I am ready for spring sports, when spring actually gets here. Its not so bad for AD Roger Stuckey because he grills the hamburgers, chicken and hot dogs, and stands by the fire...and dresses warmly. But for those of us in the stands or standing by the fields trying to take photos with your hands shaking from cold, its not so nice. I sure hope we dont go from frozen right into summer and miss out on a nice spring. I also hope this summer is not as hot and unbearable as it was last summer! However, I will take the hot over the freezing cold, especially when it gets into the teens and below. I am just hoping for warmer weather so I can enjoy covering those outdoor activities. ******* Major League baseball season is upon us and there has been a miracle already, the Cubs were above 500, in fact 1,000, for one day. I am a semi-Cubs fan and hope one of these years they actually play well and get into the playoffs, and maybe win a World Series. My No. 1 team is the Arizona Diamondbacks, just because my dad loved them when he was alive. I also like their stadium because it is air conditioned to escape the summer heat of Arizona. At least it is a dry heat. After two losses, the Chargers baseball team came through with two straight wins and I hope they have an improved season this year. The Chargers have a few good seniors and it would be nice to see them lead the program forward again. Coach Wes Fink is doing a good job. He will become the Dubois Bombers Head Coach this summer and I know he will do a good job with them. Clint Chestnut is pitching for Olney Central College this spring and doing a good job as a closerrelief pitcher. ******* Evan Biesterveld is helping the IU-Southeast team in his senior season and the Grenadiers are doing well. He is a solid doubles and singles player in his fourth year with the program. Brittany Coan, his girlfriend and also a Pike Central graduate, is a solid player for the girls team at IUSE. I hope you read the story about them last week. ******* If your son or daughter is a graduate of Pike Central or has Pike County roots and plays for a team in college or junior college, let us know and we will be glad to do a story, and would love to have their photo. I try to keep up on this aspect, but it is not always easy and we may miss some. So give us a call (354-8500) and let us know. The same goes for those with academic achievements of any kids as well. ******* If you catch a nice fish, shoot a turkey or other game or have some sports accomplishment, dont forget to let us know and send us a photo. For turkey or other game or fish photos, include the name of the person (parents names if appropriate), hometown or town where they live, a connection (if needed) to Pike County, weight of turkey, beard length and any Continued on page 3 Lady Chargers dump Loogootee Softball team ends opening week at 1-1 By Mike Johansen After a tough time at the plate in the season opening loss to North Daviess, the Pike Central Lady Chargers bounced back last Thursday to dominate the Loogootee Lady Lions and even their record for the 2013 softball season. The Lady Chargers collected as many hits as North Daviess in the opening game, but they could make only one hit count. That was a sixth inning home run by Lauren Morton that cleared the center field fence and left no doubt from the start that it was gone. However, that was the only run the Lady Chargers would get in the 2-1 loss. Stephanie Richardson was the pitcher for Pike Central, NETedition Exclusive video Lexie Shoultz backs up Taylor Stuessel, as she tries to stop a runner from reaching second. The Lady Cougars collected a single run in the top of the first inning on a walk, fielders choice and a run scoring hit. They added a second run in the fifth frame on a walk, hit and fielders choice play for a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the first, the Lady Chargers had a one out hit by Stephanie Richardson, and Lauren Morton was safe on a fielders choice play that had Richardson out at third. Taylor Stuessel walked, but a ground out ended the threat. After two, three out innings, Morton singled in the fourth, Stuessel sacrificed her to second and Bryant singled, but they were left standing by a grounder to second. Jordan Like walked to start the fifth and made it around to third, but was stranded. Morton opened the sixth inning with the fence clearing home run and was greeted at home by the whole team. Olivia Whann was safe on an error to start the seventh, but the next three batters went down and the Lady Chargers were a run short. The Lady Chargers came back with another home game on Thursday and scored in four innings to down the Lady Lions 9-4. Ashli Riley got the win, with Rich- ardson coming in during the sixth inning to close out the game. Pike Central had nine hits and Loogootee contributed two errors. Riley had a double; Richardson a double; Bryant a double and a single; Stuessel two singles; Halbrader two singles and Abbott one base hit. Loogootee had nine hits in the game and PC did not have an error. Loogootee scored two runs in the top of the first frame. Pike Central came back with one run as Morton walked, Abbott ran and stole second and scored on a Halbrader single. The third inning was a break through frame with Pike Central notching four runs. Morton, Halbrader, Emma Crow and Bryant all scored. Stuessel had a two RBI single and Bryant an inning opening double. Bryant and McCammon scored in the fourth frame for a 7-2 lead. Both had singles and Halbrader had an RBI single. Loogootee scored its other two runs in the fifth inning. Stuessel and Riley scored in the fifth frame. Stuessel had a one out single and Riley doubled her home. Riley scored on a Richardson double. Pike Central won six events and scored 94 points at South Knox with South Knox having 86, Sullivan 45 and Barr-Reeve 17, including a first and second in the 3,200 meter run. The guys had another great meet last Thursday with more than 20 boys improving their times and performances in various events.
