NHS 5K is set for May 11 The date has been set for the fifth annual Pike Central High School National Honor Society 5K Run and 3K Walk at Prides Creek Park. The Pike Central High School National Honor Society is raising funds to complete a project at Prides Creek Park and one of the ways they are raising funds is by holding a 5K Run/3K Walk at Prides Creek Park on Saturday, May 11. The registration fee for runners or walkers is $20 per person, and if registered by April 23, they will receive a race shirt. The event includes a 5K run for the more serious runners and a 3K walk for those wanting to help out the NHS with its project. Persons may also donate $20 to the event and not participate. The proceeds from the event go to the service projects of the NHS. Last year���s funds bought the boat playground by the Prides Creek boat ramps. The event will take place in and around Prides Creek Park. The race begins at 9 a.m. on May 11, with the walkers lining up behind the runners. The 5K race will start at the beach house and travel through the campgrounds and then out of the park into the Prides Creek subdivision and back to the beach house. Both are entirely on pavement. The 3K walk will not leave the park. Awards will be given for the overall male and female runners, as well as age group winners. The age Lady Chargers JV gains split By Mike Johansen After giving up two big run innings and losing to North Daviess, the Pike Central Lady Chargers JV softball team came back to down Loogootee 4-1 for a split on the first week of play for the spring. The opening game was April 2 and the North Daviess Lady Cougars had big first and fourth innings in beating the Lady Chargers JV 13-3. Samantha Halbrader and Alyx Abbott shared PC physicals are next week The annual sports physicals for any student-athletes going into grades 6 through 12 for the school year 201314 will be on Wednesday, April 17, at Pike Central Middle School. The physicals will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the middle school at a cost of $15 (checks payable to PC Athletics). The physicals are for students who plan to participate in a high school or middle school sport any time during the year. All students are required to sign in by grade level and will be seen on a first-come, first-serve basis. Students participating in a PCSC sports event during the time physicals are being conducted will be worked in accordingly. Students must have an IHSAA physical form. The medical history, consent, acknowledgement and release areas must be completed. All forms must be signed by the parent and the information area must be completed before the physical will be administered. The forms will be filed with the athletic offices and will be available that evening or can be picked up in advance from the athletic department or at the school nurse���s office. f you have questions regarding the sports physicals, contact the school athletic directors or any school nurse���s office. This is the only time they will be offered at PCMS or PCHS for the 2013-14 school year. Physicals include height, weight, blood pressure, vision screening and physical examination. The Lady Chargers had just three hits for the game, with a double by Marissa Aders, and singles from Abbott and Kimberly McCammon. The Lady Cougars scored six runs in the top of the first frame on seven hits and two walks in the first game of the season. Pike Central came back with one run in the bottom of the inning, as McCammon hit a one out single and was able to advance on stolen bases and errors and score on an error. The Lady Chargers JV added two runs in the bottom of the third in the home game. Jessica Boudakian walked, followed by Halbrader safe on an error. A double by Marissa Aders scored both runs. The Lady Cougars added seven runs in the top of the fourth to win 13-3. The Lady Chargers gave up a lone run in the first inning and came back with four runs in the second and fourth innings to down the Loogootee JV 4-1. Alyx Abbott was the starting pitcher and Halbrader came in during the fourth inning to finish off the win. Bryant was again the catcher. The Lady Chargers tied the game in the bottom of the second frame, as Morgan Hudson led off with a walk and Shanae Fulcher walked. The run scored on an error. Three more runs scored in the third inning, as Aders singled and advanced to third scoring on a Boudakian single. Abbott singled her in and an error scored the third run. Fulcher, Boudakian and Abbott scored. Bryant added two base hits. Pike Central won the JV match 6-1. In JV singles, Brandi Ruble won 8-5. In doubles, Ruble and Bailey Davis lost 3-8; Kendra Manning and Fredricka McCammon won 8-7; Jacey Fears and Maddie Atkins won 8-3; Paulina Cazares and Haven Lashbrook won 8-0; and Amber Ruble and Kylee Graves won 8-4. The Lady Chargers played in the Loogootee Open on Saturday and downed the North Daviess Lady Cougars 5-0. Howes downed Taylor Jeffers 6-3, 6-0; Waltz beat Alissa Beasley 6-1, 6-2; Childress topped Cara Jo Wilson 6-4 and 6-2. In doubles, Longabaugh and Miller beat Melissa Reed and Nicole Woodruff 6-1 and 6-3. Keepes and Mahoney beat Brag and Chestnut 6-0, 7-6 (7-5). In doubles, Longabaugh and Miller downed Amanda Livingston and Emily Buchler 6-2, 6-2. Keepes and Mahoney downed Morgan Judy and Katelyn Van Jant 6-2, 6-2. Fishing workshops Family Learn to Fish are workshops for families are coming up over several dates. They are held on the third Saturday of most months. Families will learn a little fish biology and some basic fishing skills. Participants will then have the opportunity to practice by fishing at an area stream, pond, or lake. Children should be at least 6 years of age. The workshop is free but preregistration is required. Workshop dates and locations: April 20, Terre Haute, Dobbs Park (two workshops: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. or 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.); Saturday, May 18, Indianapolis, Riverside Park.
