B-2 Wednesday, April 10, 2013 The Press-Dispatch Lady Chargers get a first and a second By Mike Johansen The Pike Central Lady Chargers had a pretty good week on the track, beating two teams at South Knox last Thursday and finishing second in a tough three team meet at North Posey on Monday. The Lady Chargers started the week taking on Sullivan and South Knox at South Knox last Thursday and came away in first place. The Lady Chargers scored 71 points, South Knox 60 and Sullivan 36. We had a very successful night at South Knox last night. Both the boys and girls track teams won. In half of the events, we placed more than one girl and in 2 events, we placed all 3 girls that were entered in the event, said PCHS Head Coach Chris Hadley. We have some girls a little banged up right now with shin splints and muscle strains, but they all pulled together and performed very well. Just about every girl improved their time in their respective events. I felt like after our win against Tecumseh on Monday that the girls may have had a false sense of complacency. The coaches and I spent Tuesday and Wednesday working with the girls to set new goals for themselves. After Mondays meet, I showed the girls their times and what times won last years Sectional meet. It was clear at that point, while we did well Monday, we had a lot of room to improve, so I challenged the girls a bit this week and they rose to that challenge. They performed awesome. We cut several of our times (individual and relays) by 10 or more seconds from Mondays meet. I think that showed the girls that when they push themselves, they can accomplish a lot more than what they may have originally thought. I am excited about the upcoming events next week. There are going to be some really tough girls at those meets and I am excited to see how our girls respond to that challenge. The 400 meter relay team of Nicah McFarland, Michal Ashby, Olivia Leighty and Kalee Hadley took first place with a time of 54.62 seconds. The Lady Chargers team of Lindsey Catt, Ivy Sullivan, Leighty and Ashby took second in the 1,600 relay clocked at 4:41.33. In the 3,200 relay, Makaila Mason, Aubrey Marrs, Lauryn Davis and Candi Miller finished third, clocked at 13:19.65. The Lady Chargers took first place in each of the field events in the meet. Janessa Foster, who turned 18 over the weekend, won the shot put with a throw of 34 feet 9 and a half inches, with Hadley finishing fourth at 2610.5. Foster won the discus Olivia Leighty works to clear the first height in the pole vault in the meet at South Knox. with a best toss of 96-5. Michal Ashby finished first in the long jump, with a best of 14-6 and Olivia Leighty was second at 14-5. Leighty won the pole vault, clearing a best 8-0, with Aubrey Marrs fourth at 6-6. Allison Sheffler won the high jump, clearing 5-0, with Cheyanna Padgett second at 4-6 and McFarland fourth, clearing 4-4. Haley placed second in the 100-meter dash, with a time of 13.88 on the warmer, but also windier day. She was also second in the 200 dash in 28.77, with Amanda Cook fourth in 33.66. Ashby finished second in the 400-meter dash in 1:05.90, with Catt third at 1:15. In the 800-meter run, Selena Guzman was second in 2:59.59 and Kaylee Gray was third at 3:01.59. Guzman was also second in the 1,600 run, clocked at 6:37.95 and Gray was third in 6:44.29. Davis finished third in the 3,200 in 15:28, and Mason was fourth in 15:53. In the 100-meter hurdles, McFarland was third, with a time of 19.59. In the 300 hurdles, Sullivan finished in third at 57.88. Evansville Mater Dei was able to out-score the Lady Chargers by 13 points on Monday, winning a threeway meet at North Posey High School. Mater Dei scored 67 points, Pike Central 54 and North Posey 34. Monday was a tough day. While I was disappointed with second and thought we had a chance to win, I had to remind myself of where our girls are at as individuals. In 8 of the 16 events, our girls improved their times from our previous two meets. That is all I can ask from our girls; to continue working hard and working towards improving their results, said Coach Hadley. I have been extremely impressed with the amount of time the girls have cut in their events just in the last two weeks. If they continue to cut time at this rate, we will have some very competitive girls come PAC and Sectional time. Im looking forward to what the rest of the season holds. Thursdays meet at the Dubois-Pike Invitational is going to be very difficult. I look for a strong performance from our 4x100 relay and all of our field events, including Olivia Leighty and Michal Ashby in the long jump, Allison Sheffler in the high jump, Olivia Leighty in pole vault and Janessa Foster in discus and shot put. We have a strong possibility to finish first or second Michal Ashby works hard to keep ahead of two other girls on the last curve in the 400 meter dash at South Knox. in each of our field events, added the coach. Foster again picked up first place finishes in two events. She won the discus with a best toss of 95-9.5, with Cheyanna Brewster third at 72-8. Foster won the shot put with a best of 33-0.5, and Hadley was third at 27-0. Sheffler finished tied for second in the high jump, clearing 5-1, and Padgett was fourth at 4-6. In the log jump, Leighty was third at 12-2, and Ashby was fourth with a best of 121. The Lady Chargers team of McFarland, Ashby, Leighty and Hadley took first place with a time of 53.94. The 3,200 relay of Mason, Marrs. Davis and Padgett was second at 13:13. McFarland was third in the 100 hurdles, with a time of 19.03, and Sullivan was fourth in 19.96. Sullivan finished second in the 300 hurdles, clocked at 56.05, and McFarland was third in 57.57. Hadley was first in the 200 meter dash in 28.23, and picked up second place in the 100 meter dash, clocked at 13.31. Ashby was second in the 400 dash, with a time of 1:05.56. Guzman picked up third place in the 800 meter run, with a time of 2:53, and Gray was fourth at 2:54. Guzman was fourth in the 1,600, with a time of 6:36.
