Flowers, Gifts & Country Gatherings PETERSBURG MOOSE EASTER EGG HUNT Salmonella outbreak not linked to melons grown in Indiana The United States Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control announced an out- break of Salmonella Carrau in pre-cut melon products on April 12. The melons were distributed by Indianapolis- based Caito Foods. While the distributor is based in Indiana, it is impor- tant to note that the melons used in the affected prod- ucts were not grown in Indi- ana. The melons that are be- ing recalled were imported from Costa Rica, Guatema- la, Honduras and Mexico. There are no melons avail- able from Indiana farmers at this time. Indiana's melon growers are currently pre- paring to plant their 2019 crop, and they expect to har- vest a safe product. The melons that are being recalled can be found in nine states, including Indiana. Several retailers in Indiana, including Kroger, Walmart, Trader Joes and Jay C stores have had the recalled prod- ucts on their shelves and ma- ny have removed the prod- ucts. It is recommended that consumers check the list of recalled melon products be- fore they make a purchase in the store or if they plan to consume melon prod- ucts they have recently pur- chased. For a list of impact- ed products and "use by" dates to look for when pur- chasing melon products, vis- it the FDA website.
