Much of the Oakland City Golf Course was wet and muddy, with a slight chill in the air, as can be expected in early morning golf in the spring. James Capozella photo By Andy Heuring Press-Dispatch Sports sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central girls' ten- nis team won both of their matches last week as they beat North Daviess 5 - 0, then won by doubles matches to pull out a 3-2 match over North Posey. The wins moved their re- cord to 5 -2 overall and 2-0 in the conference. Pike Central's first and second singles matches were romps, as Audrey Keepes won 6 -0, 6 -1 over Shaenna Knepp at number one and Meredith Benson won 6 -0, 6 -2 over Lauren Kain at number two. Shelby Vaughn, playing number three singles for the first time due Natalie Bohnert being injured, fought her way to a 7-5, 7-5 win over Chavannah Chestnut. Pike Central's Kirsten Jansen and Grace Smith won in two sets, beat- ing Ali Giesler and Emily Kemp 6 -2, 6 -3 at number one doubles. At number two, Chloe Roy and Adair Kabrick rolled to a 6 -3, 6 - 1 win over Macey Wagler and Alexi Knepp. In the junior varsity matches, Kenley Beck won number one singles 8 -1, Zo- ey Davis lost 8 -6 and Mor- gan Ice fell 8 -5. On Thursday, the Char- gers pulled out a 3-2 in over North Posey. Both doubles teams got wins against North Posey. Jensen and Smith at num- ber one handled the North Posey team of Macee Long and Lauren Koester 6 -3 and 6 -0. At number two doubles, Roy and Kabrick won 6 -3, 6 -3 over Brooklyn Gries and Addie Lingafelter. Meridith Benson got the third point for the Char- gers at number two sin- gles with a 6 -2, 6 -0 win over Sydni Flowers. Pike Central's Audrey Keepes ran into a buzzsaw in North Posey's number one singles, falling 6 -1, 6 - 1 to Nina Terwort. Vaughn lost at number 3 singles, 6 - 2, 6 -2 to Mallory Motz. Charger tennis moves to 5-2 season Jasper Wildcats nip Pike Central Chargers 6-4 The Jasper Wildcats had a big four-run second, which the Chargers need- ed to overcome, but fell short in the late going of a 6 -4 loss last Wednesday on the road. Two runs in the fourth and then two in the seventh were not enough to catch the Wildcats after they jumped out front with four runs in the second. An error, followed by a walk, and then a single and ground out by Trev- or Krapf in the second in- ning led to a four-run defi- cit the Chargers came close to but could not make up. The Wildcats added a run in the fourth and then one in the fifth. Brennon Benton had the game's only triple and one of four RBIs between Race Britton, Kyle Williams and Draven Huff. Williams hit one of three at the plate with a double. On the de- fensive end, Joey Church turned a double play. Both teams had one error and Jasper's Isaac Bartley had the game's only stolen base. Benton, Connor O'Neal, Eli Coleman and Alex Clark all scored a run, and Troy Rickard, Benton, O'Neal and Coleman each had one walk. Charger senior Braxton Rice scattered nine hits, allowing four earned runs and five walks, while strik- ing out three and going the distance. Rice threw 113 pitches, with 60 strikes and one wild pitch, while issu- ing seven ground outs and four fly outs. The Jasper Wildcats pitched Nathan Rillo, Phillip Noblitt and Andrew Wallace, allowing seven hits and four earned runs, while striking out two and walking four.
