C-12 Wednesday, April 17, 2019 The Press-Dispatch EAST GIBSON NEWS Submit school news: Email: egnews@ pressdispatch.net Deadline: Noon on Friday Norvell brings real-life experiences into the classroom By Kenzie Rudolph Ms. Lauren Norvell, M.S. teaches freshmen Bi- ology, Environmental Sci- ence and Community Ser- vice Learning at Wood Me- morial High School. Norvell grew up in Gib- son County, graduated from Wood Memorial and then went to Purdue Uni- versity to get a BS and MS in wildlife science and con- servation biology. She said, "I worked as an environmental educa- tor and education director in the not-for-profit world in Evansville for 20 years. I decided to share my re- al life experience in the classroom and give teach- ing a try." She added that she want- ed more time with kids so that she could make an im- pact. She has been in the high school classroom scene for five years, and be- fore that, she taught at the college level for six years. According to Norvell, she likes the subjects that she teaches because they apply to everyone, every day. "I study and teach about life and living things. I teach others about them- selves and their world. I like the age that I teach in the sense that they are still open to influence and change, and they are still trying to find their place in the world," said Norvell. Outside of the class- room, she says that she is a wildlife rehabilitator. She founded a not-for-profit or- ganization called "The Tal- on Trust." She said that its goal is to rescue local in- jured and orphaned rap- tors. "I am also a beekeeper. I am a backpacker and camp- er. I love all things nature and farm," added Norvell. She might be different than the average teach- er. She strives to diversify her teaching methods so that she may increase the chances of offering some- thing to the students that will help their brains click on concepts. "I use the real world and my life/career experienc- es to help the kids relate to the life science concepts I teach," said Norvell. Wood Memorial Oakland City Elementary Barton Twp.
