B-4 Sports Wednesday, Februar y 13, 2019 The Press-Dispatch preliminaries returned for competition on Saturday, with the top eight individ- uals vying for state champi- onship honors. Those who finished ninth through 16th on Friday made up the competitors in the consola- tion heat. Lady Chargers head coach Mike Bohnert, who is Natalie Bohnert's father, said that participating in the state meet as an indi- vidual was "anti-climactic." "You're not there with a team and you've got all these other girls in there with teams," Mike Bohnert said. "It's hard to get your- self fired up for that style of meet. In all her swims at that pool, I don't think I've ever seen her with a best time there." "Mentally, it's just hard to get that edge for that meet," he continued. "You've got other teams there that brought most of their team. They're com- peting to win the meet or move up. It's just a really tough meet to get ready for." In addition to winning sectional titles in the 100 -yard backstroke as a freshman, sophomore, ju- nior and senior, and in the 200 -yard individual med- ley as a sophomore, junior and senior, Natalie was the sectional runner-up in the 200 -yard freestyle as a freshman. Bohnert, who has signed a national letter of intent to swim and play golf at Southwest Minnesota State University, concluded her high school career hold- ing the school records in the 200 -yard freestyle, the 200 -yard individual med- ley, the 50 -yard freestyle, the 100 -yard freestyle, the 100 -yard backstroke and the 100 -yard breaststroke, as well as the 200 -yard medley relay (with Cass Conder, Maya Frederick and Brittany Young) and the 200 -yard freestyle re- lay and the 400 -yard free- style relay (with Quin Bailey, Maya Frederick and Young). Bohnert also broke the school record in the 500 -yard freestyle as a freshman in 2016, which was later broken by Fred- erick in 2017. Natalie also broke the Pocket Athletic Conference records in the 200 -yard in- dividual medley and the 100 -yard backstroke. "As far as her career goes, what more could you ask for? " Mike Bohnert said. "I mean, that's what you're there for." MEYER PLACES 13TH IN DIVING REGIONAL Lady Charger sopho- more Jenna Meyer placed 13th out of 20 competitors with an eight-dive score of 225.40 points in the re- gional diving competition held on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at Bloomington North. As a freshman, Meyer placed 16th with and eight- dive score of 210.55 points. Meyer missed being among the top 12 finalists by just 2-1/2 points. "They do eight out of 11 dives and then they cut the girls and take the top 12," Pike Central diving coach Missy Wilkinson Sparks said. "The top 12 divers get to finish out their dives, and the top eight move on to state." "This year, Jenna fin- ished 13th, and only 2- 1/2 points out of 12th," Wilkinson continued. "It was quite an improvement and that's all I can ask for. She has definitely shown tremendous growth since last year. I'm super proud of how well she did this sea- son." Mike Bohnert agreed. "We moved up three spots from the year be- fore, so she's steadily mov- ing up," he said. "Hopeful- ly, she can continue that in- to next year, and into the next one."
