Ed Cahill photo By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Senior Woody Brucken scored 12 points while se- nior Logan Arnold and ju- nior Dustin DuPont added 11 each to lead Tecumseh to a 45 -38 victory over host Pike Central in high school boys' basketball action on Tuesday, Feb. 5. Pike Central, trailing 28 - 13 at the end of the third pe- riod, outscored the Braves 25 -17 in the fourth quarter, when senior Christian Ben- son netted 14 of his game- high and career-high 22 points. During the first three peri- ods, the Chargers made just six of 27 field goal attempts – including one of nine tries from beyond the three-point line – before hitting nine of 12 shots in the fourth quar- ter – including five of seven from three-point range – in the fourth quarter. "I thought we were being very passive there, especial- ly in the first three quarters," said Chargers head coach Hunter Elliott, whose team slipped to 3-14 overall and 1- 4 in the Pocket Athletic Con- ference. "Kids weren't flash- ing to the ball. We weren't coming and getting it." "When they're throwing some junk defenses like that at you, you're going to just have to play basketball at times and just attack and be aggressive, and I thought we were just being passive," El- liott added. "We put up 13 in the first three quarters and 25 in the fourth. Hopefully, we figured some things out there late." Tecumseh, which im- proved to 10 -10 overall and 2-5 in the PAC, scored the game's first eight points – five by Arnold, two by Bruck- en and one by senior Steve Molinet – before a basket by Benson, off an assist by soph- omore Ethan Gorby, with 1:07 left in the opening pe- riod pulled the Chargers to within 8 -2. A fter back-to-back bas- kets by Molinet and DuPont extended the Braves' lead to 12-2 early in the second peri- od, Pike Central scored five straight points on a basket by Benson and a three-pointer by junior Ethan Scott to cut the deficit to 12-7 with 5:40 remaining in the first half. Tecumseh would end the second period with a 10 -2 scoring run that extended the Braves' lead to 22-9 at halftime. Back-to-back baskets by Benson at the start of the sec- ond half pulled the Chargers to within 22-13 with 6:43 re- maining in the third period. However, Tecumseh scored nine straight points – four by Arnold, three by Du- Pont and two by Brucken – to stretch its lead to 31-13 early in the fourth quarter. Pike Central began slowly chipping away at the deficit, as a three-pointer and a two- point basket by senior Austin Holder sandwiched around a basket by Braves sophomore Tanner Toopes cut Tecum- seh's lead to 33-18. Following a pair of free throws by DuPont, a three-pointer by Benson pulled the Chargers to with- in 35 -21 with 5:38 remaining. Then, after a basket by Molinet upped the Braves' lead to 37-21, Benson hit an- other three-pointer to cut the deficit to 37-24 with 4:20 left in the contest. Tecumseh would stretch its lead to 16 points at 40 -24 and 42-26 before Pike Cen- tral scored nine straight points – seven by Benson and two by Holder – to pull to within 42-35 with 30 sec- onds remaining. The Braves extended their lead to 44-35 on a basket by senior Josh Jagelewski with 20.8 seconds remaining be- fore a three-pointer by Ben- son narrowed the gap to 44- 38 with 12 seconds left. However, the Chargers' 25 -point fourth quarter rally would fall short, as DuPont hit one of two free throws with 7.4 seconds remaining to close out the scoring. "Twenty-five points in a quarter? That's a really big quarter," Elliott said. "It was just us being aggressive and taking good shots. "I don't think they were surprised to see that we were quite a bit shorter than them coming in," El- liott said. "But I thought our kids battled and competed and we just didn't hit some shots. We didn't finish, we didn't hit shots, and, you know, that kind of led to the final result." ROLLS Continued from page 1 See HOLDS on 3
