The Press-Dispatch Sports Wednesday, Februar y 13, 2019 B- 3 said. "He had to wrestle a re- gional champion right out of the gate. He never let that get in his head. I know the score doesn't reflect it, but Isaiah fought hard the whole time. He never gave up. We would have liked to have got- ten the win, but we were hap- py with the overall effort." "The biggest thing we took away was what we have to do just to get back here next year," McCain added. "Isaiah understands that it will take even more work and sacrifice just to achieve what we accomplished this year. Isaiah, and the whole team for that matter, is ready to get to work in the offsea- son. I'm really looking for- ward to next season." Three Lady Chargers receive All-PAC honorable mention Crow receives ICGSA Basketball Academic All-State honorable mention By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central High School senior Becca Crow has re- ceived Basketball Academ- ic All-State honorable men- tion accolades for 2018 -19 by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association. A total of 61 Indiana high school seniors were chosen as Academic All-State, while 97 more were awarded hon- orable mention. The ICGSA Academic All-State team is a program where both academic and athletic prowess are consid- ered in the selections. Items such as grade point average, college board scores and ac- ademic class rank are con- sidered along with athlet- ic performance in areas such as points per game, re- bounds per game and assists per game. IGSCA-member head coaches from schools across the state may nominate se- niors who meet criteria that includes a 3.5 GPA or high- er on a 4.0 scale or equiva- lent, an SAT score of 1,100 on the critical reading (ver- bal) and math sections or an minimum ACT compos- ite score of 24. Area players who received Academic All-State recogni- tion were Rachael Wilson of Barr-Reeve; Ruthanne Nu- ckels of North Knox; Dali- na Meyer of Tecumseh; and Grace Waggoner of Vin- cennes Rivet. Area players who also re- ceived Academic All-State honorable mention were Ashley Gabhart of Barr- Reeve; Jessica Nunge, Han- nah Hood, McKenna Tutt and Kial Mitchell, all of Castle; Alaina Spahn, Oliv- ia Effinger, Kelsey Carr and Jossie Hudson, all of Evans- ville Mater Dei; Makinzi Maurer and Hannah Wes- ley, both of North Knox; Madyson Neukam of South- ridge; and Alison Hein of Vincennes Lincoln. Becca Crow like anything special was do- ne. It's one of those things where these kids just have to learn. Any time these kids see anything (different), it's the first time they've seen it at the varsity level." Pike Central made 15 of 39 field goal attempts for the game, including six of 16 tries from beyond the three- point arc, but did not get to the free throw line until Ben- son hit a pair with 1:14 left in the game, the Chargers' only attempts of the night. "I think I was saying at every time out and every break, 'We haven't shot a free throw! We're not being aggressive toward the rim! '" said Elliott, whose team com- mitted 16 turnovers. "We were settling and not being aggressive, and that's what happens when you play that way." Benson, after hitting four of nine field goal attempts during the first three peri- ods, hit four of five shots, all from three-point range, during the fourth period and hit two free throws to reach double figures in scoring for the fourth straight game. "He's really playing good basketball right now," Elliott said. "I was a little frustrat- ed with him early on, too. I thought he just wasn't be- ing aggressive. There were so many opportunities I thought where he and some of the others had to just go play basketball." "Whatever clicked for him in that fourth quarter, that's all he was doing," El- liott added. "He wasn't get- ting any other looks that he wasn't getting the rest of the game. He was just shooting with confidence and being aggressive, and good things happen when you do that." Holder added seven points while Scott and se- nior Draven Huff tossed in five points and four points, respectively, and grabbed a team-high three rebounds each. The Braves out-rebound- ed Pike Central 24-10, with Brucken grabbing a game- high eight and Jagelewski collecting five. Brucken also had a game-high five steals while Molinet had four.
