Veronica Smith Staff Writer Emily Ryan (9) "Getting the whole school involved." Armando Chavez (10) "I love the slam dunk contest because I have never seen slam dunks in person." December 14, 2012 It wasn't until around the 19 century that Americans had started to recognize the holiday we call Christmas, but the tradition has surely changed from then to this generation. Traditions like the Christmas tree have changed, since the 1900's. The first American Christmas tree was lighted in 1923 at the white house by President Coolidge, but the Christmas tree didn't become popular until after the World War II. Christmas lights were usually used by Victorians who put their lights around their churches, but started going around houses just a few years later. There are a lot of things that are still around to keep the tradition still going such as, egg nog, mistletoe, wreaths, stockings and so on, but the things that still keep the people a child at heart is the myths about Santa Claus traveling the world in one night just to deliver presents. Other things that keep us a child at heart is the story about Rudolph and how he strived and succeed to be a part of Santa's reindeer or being naughty only gets you coal, but being nice you'll get your dream presents. The way Christmas originally started was when they had claimed the day to be Jesus' birthday in 221 AD so many people found this a religious perspective instead of considering it to be a holiday. As the years went on unreligious people started to celebrate this day as another holiday to be thankful for what you have, that's where things have changed in this generation. Now a days, we see Christmas as if it's another birthday for everybody, to get people what they've been asking for and to receive what you wanted. It's more seen as a 'I want' or 'give me' day. Yet, we all seem to keep the spirit going on with decorating the community, buying presents for our loved ones, being more generous, helping the needy, and some people even give more spirit by dressing up with ugly sweaters and reindeer antlers. Although some things have changed, the generosity and spirits durig the holiday are still a part of the tradition and always will be. RBHS hosts BE THE MATCH campaign "NO ONE FIGHTS ALONE" bracelets on sale for one dollar, all proceeds will go towards Relay For Life Brittany Villa Sports Editor Leota Beltran (11) "Seeing all the happy faces and all the amazing things that go on." Alex Hagen (12) "Hanging out with friends at the basketball games because its fun." Yesterday, December 13, Red Bluff High School hosted a "BE THE MATCH" event in honor of a beloved teacher at the school, Betsy Palubeski. Betsy was recently diagnosed with leukemia. Bone marrow transplants are needed in order to treat lifethreatening diseases such as leukemia. Through BE THE MATCH, those who are willing to donate can register to be a donor. To further support Betsy Palubeski, Red Bluff High is selling orange bracelets that read, "NO ONE FIGHTS ALONE". They are on sale for $1.00 a piece in room 405. All proceeds from the bracelets will benefit Relay for Life. Contrary to what some may believe, Red Bluff High's BE THE MATCH event was not an actual bone marrow donation process. Instead, it was simply a series of four cheek swabs, which are used to identify (peripheral blood stem cell). Only 24% of those who are called to donate are actually asked to make a full marrow donation. Out of those who are in need of full marrow transplants, the majority of them are pediatric patients. Joining the registry is free. age. When you register, you are agreeing to donate to any patient in need. Donors who undergo a Peripheral Blood Stem Cell donation do not have to have a surgical procedure. Instead, for five days prior to the donation, donors receive injections of cells. The rest of the blood goes back into the donor's body through the other arm. In the marrow donation, donors undergo a surgical procedure where the doctor uses a needle to remove liquid marrow from the back side of the donor's pelvic bone. Both procedures take between four and six weeks to fully recover and return back to normal. Although Red Bluff High School's BE THE MATCH opportunity has passed, it is not too late to join the national bone marrow registry. If you are interested, you can find a BE THE MATCH event through BeTheMatch.org. Or you can talk to your doctor about the best way for you to become a donor.
