Arts & Entertainment Page 4 December 14, 2012 'Red Dawn' proves a disappointment original. It's like they wanted it to be the same, but it just ended up being confusing. At least the 1984 movie kept me guessing what was going to happen next, while the 2012 movie was pretty predictable. The newer "Red Dawn" made one of their main characters into a military man. So it was like they already knew what they were doing. They already knew what was happening before it all happened. Half way through the new movie I found myself asleep. So, I had to re-watch part of the movie. This goes to show, that is was boring. So if you want a good action movie to watch, choose the older "Red Dawn". The newer one will make you fall asleep or feel bored. Tia Smith Guest Writer Lately, there has been a lot of hype about a new movie called "Red Dawn". Twenty-five years ago a movie with the same type of plot came out. They are both action movies about a group of teenagers, who call themselves the "Wolverines", and try to save their town from a World War III invasion. The 1984 movie's setting was in Colorado and is invaded by the Soviets, while the 2012 movie's setting was in Washington and gets invaded by North Korea. When everything breaks out into a war gone wrong, everyone runs around screaming, not knowing what to do. The group of teenagers come together and get out of town by going up in the mountains by their little town. While they are up there, they learn how to survive and how to keep themselves safe. While the newer Red Dawn's setting makes more sense, because Washington is near the One of the main characters, Jed, fighting for the "Wolverines". ocean and Colorado is not, the whole plot is a lot different from the older one. The original "Red Dawn" makes it feel like the real world. Like if World War III was really going to happen. They found their way to knowing what to do. They came together to save their town and what they thought was right. It was pretty intriguing Bluffer Staff Pick 'Sling Blade' (1996) Owen Ritter Guest Writer Sling Blade is a movie released in 1996, directed by and starring the Oscar award winning, country singer Billy Bob Thornton. It is a longer remake of the movie, Some Folks Call it Sling Blade, and Thornton directed and acted in this movie as well. Thornton plays the role of Karl Childers, a man who was born with mild retardation and lived in his garage until the age of twelve when he brutally murdered his mother and almost beheaded the young man she was with, who was, to Karl's belief, taking advantage of her. After more than 15 years of being in the mental hospital, Karl is finally set free. On the outside Karl meets a young boy named Frank Wheatly, (Lucas Black), and starts living with him and his mother, Linda Wheatly, (Natalie Canderday). While living in their garage Karl builds his relationships in the small town, both good and bad. One relationship he forms with Linda's devil of a boyfriend Doyle Hargraves, (Dwight Yoakum). Yoakum is also a country singer, who, like Thornton, has showed his talent as an actor and even director. Karl has read and, as he repeatedly explains, understands most of the bible, and he lives up to the ten commandments of the Old Testament. Though his double homicide breaks these Ten Commandments, he tries his best to teach his new friend Frank morals as the rage of his mother's evil boyfriend Doyle presses down on Frank and his small, family-like community, "Thornton's role as the main actor, Karl, would have to be his best acting that I've seen as an avid movie watcher." through this Karl will make a decision that will change his life and the life's of all the people he's grown to love. A memorable quote in Sling Blade is one of Karl's lines to one of his friends, Vaughan Cunningham, (John Ritter), "I don't reckon you have to go with women to be a good daddy to a boy. You been real squaredealin' with me. The Bible says two men ought not lay together. But I don't reckon the Good Lord would send anybody like you to Hades. That Frank, he lives inside of his own heart. That's an awful big place to live in. You take good care of that boy." This line is a great insight to the mind of the character of Karl Childers; I believe Thornton really stuck the main focus of his intention with the way he enables us to see just how Karl's mind works. You may find that in these situations you may have done something completely different, this is one of the unique factors of Sling Blade that makes is such a masterpiece. Thornton's role as the main actor, Karl, would have to be his best acting that I've seen as an avid movie watcher. Also, I can't forget to mention the Oscar Thornton won for Best Writing and Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published, and the Chicago Film critics association for best actor. All in all, I am proud to say this is my favorite movie of all time, not only for Thornton's impressive roles, but of the heartwarming story that lies within. It's so good, and it's on Netflix. A must see on Netflix! by the way the boys had come to learn how to live in the wilderness. For example, they learned to train for an army on their own. So, everything felt like it fell into place like any great action movie does. But watching the newer one made me feel lost. The story was drastically different than the The older version was much more interesting. 'Unapologetic' appeals to Rhianna's female audience Destiny Maxwell Guest Writer Rihanna, pop singer and idol for most teenage girls, released her new album "Unapologetic" on November 19. This album is a huge deal for her career,it was the upbringing for her new 777 tour, and it is the seventh album in seven years. It didn't take long for this album to take off. "Unapologetic" has an upbeat style of music and creates a great connection with Rihanna's female fans. One song that has critics going wild is "Nobody's Business" which she duets with her ex-boyfriend, Chris Brown. In the song, they declare that their love is perfect and is also nobody's business. "Unapologetic" sends a similar message but more along the lines of the fact that she's just tired of hearing all of the negative things critics have to say. "Numb" is another song in her newest album featuring Eminem; it is a wonderful song and it talks about how Rihanna is now going "numb" to all of the negative things that are being said about her. Although this song is repetitive, it sends a good message. People shouldn't let the things being said to them affect their lives. Everyone should just be themselves, despite what everyone else thinks. "Diamond" is one of her slower beat songs, the message she was sending was that everyone has a choice to be happy and in her relationship her and her partner are shining bright, The album cover of Rhiannaʼs "Unapologetic". and nothing the critics say will bring them down. Choosing to be happy is what makes you unique, like diamonds. I really enjoyed the album. The album has a beat that makes people want to get off their chair and dance around. If you haven't listened to this album, I would strongly recommend that you do, but it may not be worth buying the entire album. Worth buying a couple songs, but not the entire album.
