The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, April 18, 2018 C-1 CHURCH Submit church items: Call: 812-354-8500 Email: news@pressdispatch.net or bring in a hard copy: 820 E. Poplar Street, Petersburg Another week gone by and spring hasn't sprung yet. Bad when a television weather man says that 2018 may be the year with- out a Spring. Oh well it's just something that we'll have to put up with. Just about all the viruses and silly sick- nesses that have made their rounds have stopped to visit my wife and I. We're be- ginning to wonder what's next. If you be- come resistant to sicknesses after having them we should be a catalog of antibodies. We missed having church services this past Sunday and we do appreciate our good friend Rich Russell for taking care of things for us. Seems as though when we see an up turn at our church something tries to knock us back down. The devil is full of tricks to stir up trouble and keep things in an uproar. The Bible says he might try but he loses in the end. If we would have had our sermon Sunday we would have spoke about tempting God. Jesus went through the Devil's tempting af- ter fasting in the wilderness and refused power, glory and prestige along with nour- ishment. Jesus showed us that we don't live just for what this world can offer but by the word of God. This tempting ended with Je- sus telling the Devil to get behind Him and leave. The Devil was again defeated and if we resist him as he tempts us he will again be defeated. Stay faithful and true to God and don't give up and don't give in. You know it feels good to compliment people when you can and we have some great guys working on our city street crew. The fellows on our street crew seem to have a devotion to doing their jobs and most of the time they go above and beyond what they would have to do. If you see them out working give them a shout and tell them you appreciate what they do. Since I'm a little late with my column and yesterday's ailment is still holding me back a little I will close for now so as always be a blessing and be blessed. We live in a world of good and evil. It is a world where two kingdoms are always in con- flict. God is lovingly calling people to for- sake sin and follow Him. The power of Satan is always pulling people away from God and seeking to destroy all that is good. Life is filled with struggles and tempta- tions. There is a real devil that seeks con- trol of each person. Our generation has propelled the gospel of salvation across the known world. This Gospel is always in conflict with evil. The cultural wars, the breakdown in family values are results of this battle. The battlefield may be anywhere, but it is always in the heart and mind. For exam- ple, Hollywood and the movie industry and internet social media are gener- ating lies and filth which are disguised to destroy America's youth. This is one of the ways Satan tries to destroy our young people. Another ex- ample of this strug- gle and warfare is the modern media bi- as towards Christianity. In the guise of public entertainment, Christians are of- ten played in unfavorable roles. The seri- ousness of this conflict is seen in our cul- tures' rebellion against God. In this bat- tle we must all choose between God and the forces of evil. "Is our grace age, which Paul calls 'this present evil world [age]' (Gal. 1:4), worse than the time of Nimrod or what is seen in Romans 1:18 -32? " This age is evil. Every dispensation or age in man's history has been evil. Every age has demonstrated that the heart of man- kind "is deceitful above all things, and des- perately wicked" ( Jer. 17:9), that people are sinners in need of the Lord. I don't think our age is worse than the time of Nimrod or what is seen in Romans 1:18 -32, but rather very similar. Romans 1:18 -32 sounds like a commentary on our times! Mankind doesn't change. Mankind has been evil, is evil, and will be evil. News of mankind's wickedness shouldn't completely shock the believer. Rather, it should immediately remind us of people's need for Christ and His salvation, and our need to be "Redeeming the time, because the days are evil" (Eph. 5:16). Faith in Christ brings new life and can bring trans- formation to people's lives, so that they might live "in all goodness and righteous- ness and truth" (Eph. 5:9). Paul calls it "this present evil world" to impress upon us the glory of our deliver- ance from it by Christ and His Cross. Gala- tians 1:4 shows us "Who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil world." Knowledge of this hope is to cause us to react with thanksgiving and praise to our Savior, "To Whom be glo- ry for ever and ever" (Gal. 1:5), and "that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto Him which died for them, and rose again" (2 Cor. 5:15).
