Pike Central took a 1-0 lead in the first in- ning when senior left fielder Jordan Mont- gomery reached on a one-out single, ad- vanced to second on a single by senior first baseman Demi Croak, then scored on a sin- gle by senior third baseman Jalah Barnes. However, the Lady Braves scored two runs in the second inning, plated two more in the third inning, and added two in the fourth inning to take a 6 -1 lead. A fter collecting three hits in the first inning, Pike Central was held to just four more hits – all singles – over the final six innings. Senior Maddie Duncan pitched all seven innings for Tecumseh, allowing one run – By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Pike Central High School baseball team turned a bas- es-loaded infield fly into a triple play during a 9 -2 loss to visiting Jasper on Wednesday, April 11. The Wildcats were leading 3- 0 when senior left fielder Quintin Gordon stepped up to the plate with no outs in the third inning with senior catcher Austin Sim- mers on third base, senior pitcher Jacob Lents on second base and senior first baseman Noah Lueb- behusen on first base. However, Pike Central junior pitcher Brennon Benton got Gor- don to hit a pop-up on the infield and Gordon – because the bases were loaded with less than two outs – was immediately called out on the infield fly rule. But when Benton and junior third baseman Braxton Rice con- verged just inside the third base line to catch Gordon's pop fly, they both – thinking the other was go- ing to make the play – backed away, allowing the ball to drop to the ground in fair territory. Simmers, who had retreated to third base, immediately darted to- ward home and scored to extend Jasper's lead to 4-0. Rice picked up the ball and, re- alizing that Lents was standing motionless midway between sec- ond and third, threw the ball to ju- nior shortstop Race Britton, who tagged Lents for the second out of the inning. Britton then threw the ball to junior second baseman Troy Rick- ert, who quickly relayed it to ju- nior first baseman Kyle Williams, who tagged Luebbehusen – who had been standing motionless midway between first and sec- ond – before he could get back to the bag for the third out. Triple play. Or, perhaps, more appropri- ately, a "senior" moment for the Wildcats. "Basically, as soon as the in- field fly is called, the batter is out," Pike Central head coach Josh Mc- Donald said. "It's up to the discre- tion of the baserunners whether they want to run or not, but they have to tag up." "It's like a caught ball," Mc- Donald added. "Even though we dropped it, it's a caught ball." Jasper would go on to score three more runs in the fourth in- ning and two more in the fifth to widen its lead to 9 -0 before the Chargers rallied for two runs in the sixth inning. Benton led off the inning with a single, advanced to third on a dou- ble by Rice then scored on a one- out infield grounder by Williams for Pike Central's first run. Rickard followed with a single past Jasper junior shortstop Josh Weidenbenner, plating Rice with the Chargers' second run. However, Wildcat junior Isaac Bartley – who had relieved Lents at the start of the fifth inning – struck out senior catcher Nathan The Pike Central High School boys' golf team improved to 10 -0 with a first-place finish in a sev- en-team, nine-hole invitational at the Country Oaks Golf Club on Thursday, April 12. The Chargers had a team score of 176, finishing six strokes ahead of South Knox's 182 and sev- en strokes ahead of Washington Catholic's 183. Host Washington was fourth with a 193, followed by Barr-Reeve (219), Eastern Greene (221) and North Daviess (230). Junior Noah Onyett led Pike County with a 41, while junior Austin Holder fired a career-low 42. Junior Hayden Kabrick added a 46, while sophomore Jaylon Mills shot a 47. Senior Lincoln Vaughn and freshman Cutter Reed both had scores of 49. "We didn't play our best collec- tively but the conditions were very difficult with wind gusts of up to 30 miles per hour," Chargers head coach Jarrod Gideon said. "It was nice to get the big wins versus some quality opponents." On Wednesday, April 11, Pike Central posted a 176 -217 victory over Princeton at the Princeton Country Club. Onyett paced the Chargers with a nine-hole round of 39. Vaughn had a 43, while Kabrick fired a 46. Holder and junior Jed Evans both had scores of 48, while Reed shot a 50. In addition, sophomores Col- in Craig and Quinton Sorgius both had 56s in their first-ever match. "It was another cold match – we are looking forward to warm- er weather," Gideon said. "We are capable of shooting better scores, and we hope to get our team scores down into the 160s." Pike Central, which hosted Heritage Hills and Southridge on Tuesday, April 17, will host North Knox on Thursday, April 19. The Chargers will then travel to South Spencer on Monday, April 23.
