B-4 Sports Wednesday, April 18, 2018 The Press-Dispatch Yellow beams of morn- ing sunlight shoot through the forest like headlights on a foggy night, causing the tree leaves to glow with greenish-yellow light. The woods come to life as small forest birds fly from branch to branch, hunting for small bugs. The singing birds fill the forest with whistles, chirps and trills. There is a slight chill in the air, so I pull my shoul- ders down a little further into my insulated hunting shirt. I scan the woods for movement before noise from the upper reaches of a tall hickory tree draws my atten- tion. I see a large bird walk- ing along a limb, rustling its wings and making soft calls that reverberate through the woods in crisp clear tones. I continue to watch the bird, my shot gun held com- fortably on my camouflaged knee, until it stretches its wings and dives down from its perch into the forest. It glides right over the top of my father-in-law, Mark, and I with outstretched wings and spread tail. "Was that a tom? " Mark whispers. "No, it was a hen," I whisper back. A fter the woods are quiet again, I pick up my slate call and scratch out a few yelps. I pause and wait for the cut- ting eruption of a gobble to answer. But nothing hap- pens, and our hopes of con- necting with a tom on a sun- drenched Saturday morn- ing begin to fade. "I wonder where he is this morning? " Mark asks. I look over at him and reply, "I don't know, but he's definitely not here." Last Saturday, we watched a tom strut along the ridge we are sitting on for close to an hour. We were set up out of shooting distance, and while the gobbler would re- spond to calling, he wouldn't leave his ridge. So we sat and watched his puffed-up body, fanned tail and white head move in a 25 -yard line back and forth along the ridge like a turkey pendulum with a never-ending battery. The tom obviously had had enough hen action to keep him satisfied. He didn't need to bother searching for a lone hen that he couldn't see and he'd have to leave HUNTER PAVING & CONSTRUCTION • FREE ESTIMATES • SAME QUALITY SERVICE Call Kurt Schurz ( 812 ) 309-2833 We're here for your...
