Also in the crowd of about 60 attending the Sts. Peter and Paul Parish Hall hosted event were house of representatives candi- dates John Hurley and Joseph Lannan. A number of Pike Coun- ty candidates and party officials were present and introduced, in- cluding sheriff candidate Kent Johnson, sheriff candidate John Bellamy, County Commissioner District 3 candidate Steven R. Vi- an, county auditor candidate Jody Lynn Hoover, county recorder can- didate Lida Ann Robinson, sheriff candidate Brad Jenkins, County Commissioner district 3 candidate Heath Scraper and Judge Jeff Bi- esterveld. Pike County Democrat Par- ty Chair Wil Teague welcomed everyone to the event and intro- duced special guests John Huley and Joseph Lannan, and the fea- tured speaker William Tanoos. Local candidates in attendance addressed the gathering and then heard from Tanoos following a ca- tered meal by 423 Smokehouse. Tanoos, who is running for the 8th district congressional seat, said he is a social disability law- yer. He believed Medicare, Med- icaid and social security were pro- grams, not entitlements, that peo- ple paid for and deserve. He is "100 percent pro labor and with the mid- dle class, working class people." Tanoos is for the economy com- ing "from the people out" and "not trickle down." He said there was a lot of work to do and likened it to a bunch of drops of water working together. Tanoos said that the 800 people in Winslow deserve representation and also a bank, stating that there was a need for small business in the economy. He said that just be- cause someone is a doctor doesn't mean they know everything. Ta- noos related a story about a rela- tive who was a doctor but did not gamble. The doctor was finally talked into going into a casino and had money fall from the slot ma- chine every time he pulled the han- dle. In a short time, he was hooked on slots. Eventually he found out that he was using a change ma- chine! He also told the story of Hen- ry Ford paying astronomical wag- es then to build Model Ts, which made him the richest man in the world. His cunning was that they and those who shared in the high pay would in turn buy the car. Earlier in the evening, John Hur- ley spoke about doing away with the right to work and to keep gov- ernment local. He said that he liked the Pike County area, includ- ing Petersburg and Winslow. There was a social hour, with Hurley and Lannan beginning at 5 p.m. with hors d'oeures and fun- draising. A fter the main speaker, a number of door prizes were drawn and then an auction was held for a great many pies, cakes and des- serts. Democratic candidate for U.S. Representative William Ta- noos was the featured speaker at Saturday's Pike County Democratic Party annual St. Patrick's Day dinner and fund- raiser. James Capozella photos Cindy and Richard Ridao both assisted with the food line and then auc- tioned off quite a number of desserts brought in at the annual Pike County Democratic Party St. Patrick's Day dinner and fundraiser on Saturday. Sher- iff candidate Kent Johnson was one of the winning bidders claiming a des- sert on Saturday. Joseph Lannan spoke at the dinner at Saturday's Pike County Democrat- ic Party St. Patrick's Day dinner and fundraiser. Lannan is running for state representative House District 63. John Hurley is running for state representative and addressed the crowd at the Pike County Democratic Party St. Patrick's Day Din- ner and fundraiser gather- ing prior to the dinner. Hur- ley had to leave early that evening for another engage- ment. Pike County Democratic Party Chair Wil Teague wel- comed everyone to the an- nual St. Patrick's Day din- ner and fundraiser event this past Saturday at the Sts.
