Poplar Street, Petersburg This past Sunday our sermon was about trusting God and some of the areas we need to seek His help the most. It is very impor- tant in a Christian's life to depend on God in all areas of our life. But it seems there are some areas where we tend to rely on our own understanding more so then others. One of the first things we must do to al- low God to lead and direct our daily lives is to set our priorities correctly. Pleasing God in what we say and do must be our top pri- ority and if we have that correct our trust in His guidance will come naturally. God also gives us something that I don't use as much as I should and that is common sense. So there are things that God is telling us to trust that He has taught us to do with- out much ado. We must also know we have been forgiven and given Grace from God. With this knowl- edge comes a peace of mind which allows us to be the person God needs us to be. The apostle Paul knew he was saved but he al- ways felt like he had to overcome people's knowledge of how he had persecuted the church in his earlier years. This caused him to always doubt his worthiness to the King- dom of God. We must trust the word of God for in them you will find salvation and you are worthy or Jesus would not have given His life for you. So what must we do to gain the ability to trust that our lives will be directed by God? First we must present ourselves a liv- The Church Page is made possible by the following Firms and Businesses: Amber Manor Care Center Petersburg — 812-354-3001 Benner & Co. In our public educational system, God is at- tacked or ignored, and our textbooks ne- glect our American heritage and plant the seeds of socialism. Life seems to move at a faster pace and we have few absolutes. Our culture is filled with sex and family values taught in the Bible are in short sup- ply. The morality that helped protect our youth and safeguard our homes is thought of as old fashioned and out of date. This has brought many emotional problems and filled the hearts of many with pain and anguish. Those families that value love, respect and morality are coming under new pres- sure to accept sinful practices. We now have our most corrupt government in Ameri- can history and most Bible standards are banned in the public arena. Abortion, same- sex marriages and pre-marital sex are ac- cepted as the norm. The Bible teaches that males and females are blessed of God for the purpose of hav- ing children and experiencing hap- py lives. Our cul- ture puts good fami- lies under stress and threatens their stabil- ity. God's loving pur- pose for people and families has become distorted. Always remember that God is at work in the difficult strug- gles Christians face in a world that is be- coming more hostile to Christianity. Many families live with stress and fear because of the unexpected changes in our world. Good and evil have been present since the beginning of time, but it is more evident in our government, education, entertainment and the changing religious beliefs. As nev- er before pastors must share the teaching of God's Word to give hope and purpose to those struggling with the evils of 2018. "Woe unto him that giveth his neighbor drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken." —Habakkuk 2:15 There are many passages in the Word of God, such as the above reference, that are timeless principles. While the alcohol indus- try goes to great lengths to get people to be- lieve that drinking is a harmless way to have a good time, the facts are otherwise. It is very careful never to advertise the alcohol- ic who is dying of cirrhosis of the liver or the homes that have been destroyed by strong drink. And of course, there's always a voice in the crowd that says a few social drinks will never hurt anyone. Most recovering al- coholics, however, tell a much different sto- ry of how their slide into a life of drunken- ness all started with social drinking. "Wine is a mocker, strong drink is rag- ing: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise" (Prov. 20 :1). Many years ago, I was driving through Apollo, Pennsylvania, where I saw a man- gled piece of wreckage alongside of the road. Upon slowing down, I discovered it was an automobile, or at least what was left of it. Apparently someone survived the crash because there were beer cans stra- tegically placed beside the car with a sign, which read, "And they told us we were go- ing to have fun! " Someone lied. Contrary to the world's view that alco- holism is a disease, the Word of God calls drunkenness a sin (Gal. 5:19 -21). Exces- sive drinking is not a disease; it is a mat- ter of choice. Steve Selby, Pastor Elaine Barrett, Reporter Sunday's Easter message was about Peter's denial of Christ. Scripture was read from Matthew 26:69 -75. Even though Peter denied Christ three times, he still worked for the Lord. Even though we sin, we should always ask for forgiveness and keeping pressing for the mark, not blaming oth- ers for our mistakes. March 25 is Palm Sunday. It is also Assistant Teacher Sunday and the offering will go to the Building Fund. March 26 -30 is Pike Coun- ty's Spring Break. Good Friday is on March 30. We will have our Eas- ter egg hunt on Saturday, March 31 at 2 p.m. April 1 will be Easter and we will have Communion. Our Mission Statement: Loving the 99, always look- ing for the one. Gary Pancake, Pastor Ivan Mason, Reporter My command is this: "Love one another as I have loved you" ( John 15:12). How many problems would be solved if we did as the Lord commanded us to do, and it is so sim- ple, "Love one another as I have loved you." We know he loves us with the great- est love ever known, be- cause he is love. We have added a new group to our church. It is called the JOY group. Joy standing for "Just Older Youth." Barbara Mitchell is our leader and we are planning various activities, from sewing, doing proj- ects for different organi- zations and going on some outings. We are meeting the second Monday of the month at the church at 10 am. Anyone interested, is very welcome. Remember to pray for those in need, our country and our leaders. You are welcome to worship with us at any of our services. You will be blessed. Remember those on our prayer list, the shut ins and our lost loved ones. The key to being an obe- dient servant of Christ Je- sus can be found in Psalm 25:9: "He guides the hum- ble in what is right and teaches them his way," The one who "guides" and "teaches" is the Lord Him- self, and those whom He guides and teaches are "the humble." "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wick- ed ways, then will I hear from heaven and will for-
