Sports Brittany Villa Sports Editor The Red Bluff High School boy's varsity football team's season has finally come to an end. After weeks and weeks of hard work and dedication from both the players and the coaching staff, the team made it to the play-offs for the first time in eight years. The players were proud that their efforts had paid off, but wished they could have made it further than they did. "I think people really doubted the ability of the team and it was nice to be able to prove to everyone that we really were a better team than in previous years," said Blake Villa, senior. The team's overall record was six wins and five losses. Varsity football puts up a good fight Page 6 November 16, 2012 Spartans. The team's sealed their play-off positon when they beat the Bobcats, and their goal of making it to play- offs was achieved. According to Stango, Coach Hein says he is proud of the season's outcome, but a lot of the players feel as if they let him down by not going further in play-offs. "The team just got Egan Meagher/BLUFFER Lucas Burns punts the ball in the Spartanʼs first play-off game in eight years against Foothill. According to senior, "We had a winning season, Lester Gonzales, it was a decent record in comparison to previous years, but the team had the potential to go further and do better. but every Spartan on that team would tell you that we are a lot better than our record shows," said Richard Stango, senior. This year, the Spartans FFER Varsity volleyball fails to produce wins Laura DeFonte Staff Writer The varsity volleyball team ended their season with an overall record of 9-19 and league with 0-8. They kept a good attitude and stayed strong the whole season and always had a great bond with their teammates. This year there was only three seniors on the team: Maggie Hansen, Jessica Macdonald and Shelby McKinstry. They've played through high school. There is one freshman on the team, Katie Gallagher, who was moved up and is now playing with her sister Emily Gallagher, who is a junior. The team had a variety of strong and talented players who always stayed focus through out the season. "Work hard, play hard!" as Junior Brittany Clatty would say. She felt that they worked hard to get better, but couldn't succeed at dominating the floor. The team played hard and did there best to bring home some wins. Trying new plays to pysch out the other team. The juniors are looking forward to their senior year and playing on varsity. Most of the juniors have been playing together all through high school, so they all have a team bond and frienship, which makes playing on the court much easier. The new incoming teammates from the junior varsity team are expecting a new challenge for playing at a higher level and will use it to learn and be the best they can be for their upcoming senior year. "I'm going to miss going to all the way away tournaments in Reno and Berkley and spending time with my amazing team" said four year playing Senior Shelby McKinstry. The seniors will miss Red Bluff High School volleyball and all the fun they had playing through out high school with the same team mates. Cross Country makes strides of improvement Veronica Smith Staff Writer With cross country at an end for the year, many of the players would say they had just an alright season and stood strong from the beginning to the end, but they were all able to be more than satisfied in themselves for what they had accomplished. One difference from this last year is that this year the team is in a higher district group meaning it wasn't as easy as it was last year. "We did alright this year, last year we were in a different league but we all improved greatly," said junior, Ian Borchard. Many of the runners had some injuries this year, but Coach Hendricks says that he was very pleased with their attitude towards the team and were supportive the whole way through the season. "This season, we had a surprise in the performance of Nicole Renfroe who finished the year as our top female runner, and our top male runner was Jordan McManus who was also the team leader," Coach Hedricks said. In the beginning of the season the cross country team had a race in Monterey Bay and Nicole Renfroe placed first in JV. One great thing about this season for the cross country runners was that each and every single person set a new personal record for themselves. "Overall, I am pleased with the improvement of the group this year," says Coach Hendricks. One out side hitter's, junior Tayler Zazueta, always dominated on offense with her hard hitting, focus and love for the sport. She's been playing for Red Bluff since her freshman year. "I feel like this year's season wasn't what we wanted it to be, but it was a learning expeirnce and it was a fun season overall playing with seniorsand playing at a more competitive level" Zazueta mentioned. Overall the team did well and will go back at it next year and try to score more and be more strong on offense and defense. played their long-time rival, the Corning Cardinals, in the annual shoot-out. The Cardinals were shut out with a final score of 35-0 in which the Spartans took the win. The played boys also the Paradise Bobcats, who were ranked as the number one team in the league before they were beat by the Red Bluff High School mentally and physically burnt out. We went into the last game content with simply beating Paradise and unprepared to put in out best effort in play-offs," said Gonzales. Overall, the boys had a successful season, with a lot of improvement throughout. The team was happy with their successes, but wished they could have made it further in play-offs. Girls golf finishes strong Mitch Fox Staff Writer Although the girls finished second in league behind Pleasant Valley, they are still happy about how their season went. Red Bluff sent Sofia Frantz, sophomore, to Nor Cals this year where she placed 74th out of over 100 players. "I was happy with the way I played in Nor Cals," said Frantz. The Nor Cal tournament was held at Brookside in Stockton this year. Frantz and her teammate, Mickenzie Perdue, would battle for the number 1 and 2 spot on the team all year followed by Sofia Frantz's twin sister Summer Frantz, who was the Spartan's number three for the majority of the season. Mickenzie is a senior that finished fourth overall in league. "My goals this season were to play good the whole season and make all league," said Perdue. According to her, she has met those goals. The number three, Summer Frantz, is very happy with this year's season and was pleased with everyone's performance. "I think we did better than last year and everyone did better individually," said Summer. She thinks that the cause of her team's success this year is that they have more confidence. Summer says that having her twin on the team makes her more competitive, always trying to one up each other. Although both of the Frantz twins had success this year it did not come easy. They both also played volleyball as well as golf this past fall. Summer Frantz said that it was difficult to juggle between the two sports. "My goals at the beginning of the season were to help my team be successful and do my best every time," said Summer. According to Summer she has met these goals. The returning players say they will be practicing often this off season in order to prepare for next year. JV/Frosh football hopes to perform better Laura DeFonte Staff Writer The freshman and junior varsity team ended their football season. The junior varsity team had a 2-7 score overall and the freshman had a 0-6. The freshmen's new coach this year, Ty Minto, was trying out a new defense method for the team. It was his first year coaching at Red Bluff High School. The junior varsity's coach was Dan Ackley. The teams are usually at each others' games to support each other and have a lot of school pride and spirit. Both the teams ended their seasons working hard and getting more experience for future seasons. The teams decrease in number throughout the years from players who quit, which leads to a committed varsity team. This year's Freshman team had about 50 new players. For some players, it is their first year ever playing football while others have played before. This year, the coaches cracked down on grades and behavior in class to make sure their players were still keeping their grades up and having good, acceptable behavior in class. Sports have a good effect on how students look at their grades. They want to play a sport, but need decent grades to play; therefore, they keep their grades up just for the sport. This gives our school a positive effect on education. The teams worked hard all year and had great, fun practices. Their practices and determination did pay off with a fun filled season Dwight's Sports Corner The San Francisco Giants are once again the World Series champions. Barry Zito won the Hutch Award and Buster Posey is a finalist for National League Most Valuable Player. The San Francisco 49ers beat the Arizona cardinals 24-4 on October 29th. Most recently they tied the St. Louis Rams 24- 24. They play the Chicago Bears Monday the 19th in San Francisco. Sports Update/Garrett Sandow & Ryan Fisher and some wins. The boys hope in their following seasons to get more wins and to get to the play offs their junior or senior year. Many junior varsity players are excited to be moved up on to varsity. Both the teams are looking forward to next year's season and are ready to make improvements. Many improvements will be necessary, however, if these teams are to have successful seasons like this year's varsity team.
