We're always chasing the perfect mix of family life, work life and "me" time. There are so many expectations. We tell ourselves our children should be in a million activities (that we should always attend), the house should be spotless, we should exercise daily and there should be some type of made- from-scratch organic meal on the table every night (where the entire family sits down together and eats in peace). Let's get real for a minute… This is no parent's reality. The truth is that parents feel stretched in a thousand different directions. So where is that perfect balance, the happy place where you feel like you're giving enough to your family but also practicing self-care? Is it okay for a mother to leave the house and do something alone or with a friend, and if it is, why do we feel like we're neglecting our children while we're gone? The truth is, there is no magic equa- tion for time spent with family vs. time spent away to equal a happy mom; it looks different for everyone. It is, how- ever, important to take time to care for yourself. So how do you make time for your- self? I've listed some suggestions be- low. • Make a date with yourself. Seri- ously, schedule a time to sit down and decide what you can do for you and realistically not feel overwhelmed by missing things going on at home. This looks different for everyone, and that is okay. • Make a list of things you want to try or make time for again. Maybe you were formerly an avid reader but now fall asleep as soon as your head hits the pillow and have forgotten what it feels like to be lost in a good book. Pick those books back up. • Contact long-lost friends and get together (they probably need "friend time" too). • Delegate. Let your village help you. The weight of the world does not have to be solely on your shoulders. • Decide how often you need this time and schedule it. The more love you show yourself, the easier it will become to take the time for self-care. Taking time to reset and recharge will supply the energy and patience you've been looking for. Life is not a Pinterest board. Things get messy and busy, and in all of the chaos it is important to remember that you're a good mom. Allowing yourself to reset helps you handle the messes more seamlessly. This column is contributed by Jordan Beach, MSW, school social worker for Youth First, Inc., a local nonprofit ded- icated to strengthening youth and fam- ilies. Youth First provides 39 Master's level social workers to 57 schools in 7 southwestern Indiana counties. Over 60,000 youth and families per year are served by Youth First's school social work and afterschool programs that prevent substance abuse, promote healthy behav- iors, and maximize student success. HOT FUDGE BROWNIE BREAD By Monica Sinclair I know I shouldn't, but after seeing a recipe on Facebook this week, I just had to include it, even though it isn't one of the healthiest. However, sometimes you just need that chocolate fix. This recipe is ooey and gooey, and did I mention it's chocolate? If that's not enough to sell you, it's also quick and easy to make. So, put on those sweatpants, tell yourself you deserve it and give yourself a treat this weekend! Enjoy! INGREDIENTS 1 box of moist brownie mix 3 large eggs 1-11 oz. jar of hot fudge sauce 1/3 cup vegetable oil DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 2. In a medium bowl, combine all of the ingredients, mix until smooth. 3. Pour it into a non-stick sprayed loaf pan, about 3/4 of the way up. 4. Bake 40 -45 minutes, or until it's cooked all the way through. 5. Let it cool completely before removing it from the pan. Postcard number 641 is a nighttime picture of Pitts- burgh, Pa. The colorful lights of downtown Pitts- burgh shine through the night, and is playing the city's three rivers brilliantly. It shows lights on the high- rise buildings and the trav- eled streets and waterways. This postcard reads: Hel- lo Sweets! Never a dull day in the life of a traveling man. How is Winslow? Indiana, if you don't like the weather, give it a minute and it will change. I hope you like this postcard and the very beau- tiful skyline with blue skies and tailwinds. Make Ameri- ca Great Again. Thank you for the post- card of Pittsburgh at night, and yes we do love this view of a busy, big city with all their nighttime enter- tainment. You are so right about our weather, and it has changed in temps from warm to cold in only one day and back to warm again. Have fun as you travel, and thanks again as you make America great. In Winslow, the Patoka River was rising all week, but on Friday, the river couldn't hold anymore. It overflowed a little into the Riverside Park Sunday and when Norm and I drove by, the Patoka had dumped more water into the River- side Park, where the shel- ter house had water almost to the seats of the concrete tables. The Beaver is tread- ing in water by the boat ramps and Da-Woo the Es- kimo has water around his base. Flooding is also in Millers Field close to the shelter house. The first street off Union is partial- ly covered and the back- road from Goosehill South has flooded. The houses in these areas are fine now, but when the rain water from all the hills dry up, it may rise more. We have had sprinkles and heavy rains come in our area all week long, and it was to accumulate nine inches when the rain stops, which was Sunday morn- ing. Our weather has been nice, with temps in the 60 - 72 degree range, with 50s at nighttime. Most of last week, you only needed a jacket or sweater. The trees have more buds on them, clumps of grass are appear- ing, the daffodils are bloom- ing in the sunny spots, and the crocus are in bloom at Janie's house and the resur- rection plants are up. I know it is too early to plant, but the weather has brought the warm temps and it's been nice when it doesn't rain, so the brain says it's spring.
