Poplar Street, Petersburg The flu season has really been extra hard this year and as Steve and I volunteer in sev- eral facilities playing and singing we have to check with each of them to see if it is safe for us to entertain the residents with our songs. They know if it is safe or not and they will ask if there is any thing going on with your health which might harm their residents. Let's all be responsible citizens and help each other stay as healthy as possible. It's not fun to lose our nursing home residents because you get to know many of them and The Church Page is made possible by the following Firms and Businesses: Amber Manor Care Center Petersburg — 812-354-3001 Benner & Co. Stam Baptist Baptist Baptist Assembly of God CHURCH CHURCH Notes Notes Notes Continued in next column Continued in next column Continued on page 3 Ramblings of my mind by Lowell Thomas This month we celebrate the birthdays of two great Americans, George Washing- ton and Abraham Lincoln. These were men who had great faith in God and depended on Him for guidance. They spoke freely about their Christian faith and believed that Amer- ica was one nation under God. The media and liberal political leaders would like for us to forget our great spir- itual heritage. It was George Washington who said, "It is impossible to rightly gov- ern the nation without God and the Bible." Abraham Lincoln said, "It is the duty of na- tion's as well as of men to owe their depen- dence upon the overruling power of God. All history proves that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord." Many people have little knowledge of the biblical foundation upon which our Found- ing Fathers built this great nation. Today we have about 324 million citizens. That is about six percent of the worlds popu- lation, but we pos- sess about 50 per- cent of the world's wealth. Today we are the world's econom- ic, political and mili- tary leader. Over the past 65 years our nation has reversed its course from a nation whose godliness prevailed to a nation that has no time for God and His standard of morali- ty. If truth does not prevail in this crisis we will stand on the brink of tyranny. This na- tion was founded with a purpose and truth and moral values were absolute. "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord." (Psalm 33:12) While visiting a young pastor and his fam- ily some time ago, I observed a touching ex- ample of true Christian stewardship. It was nearly time to go to church, when the pastor's wife reached for a small box containing a few coins and handed it to her little boy. The coins represented the boy's earnings received for jobs done, good be- havior, etc. Seriously, the boy contemplated the con- tents of the box and took from it two dimes — a substantial portion of the whole. Then looking up at me he said earnestly: "This is for Jesus." Several Scriptural lessons about Chris- tian giving came to mind as we observed this simple incident. This little lad had already been taught the responsibility of participating system- atically in supporting the work of the Lord (I Cor. 16:2). He gave "as he purposed in his heart;"; no one suggested how much he ought to give (IICor. 9:7). A fter thinking it over carefully, he gave sacrificially (II Cor. 8:7,9). He "proved the sincerity of his love" (II Cor. 8:8), for it was with sincere, child- like affection that he said: "This is for Je- sus." Most of all, perhaps, his gift was a liv- ing demonstration of Paul's exhortation in Romans 12:8: "He that giveth, let him do it with simplicity." There was no fanfare, no boasting, no evidence of any feeling that he was doing a lot for the Lord; just an attitude of simple, humble satisfaction that he could join others in supporting the work of Christ. How much we, who have too often been hardened through the years, can learn from children! Continued on page 2 On Sunday I found out how whoever is re- sponsible for making the decisions concern- ing cancelling school or delaying start time must feel. I got up early Sunday morning so I could see what the weather was going to be like for church services. We have folks coming from Washington and folks who live on country roads that could have possibly been slick. Well after listening to it rain for awhile and checking with several reliable radars about the weather I made the call to say no services today. Turns out we had ice but the roads were relatively clear. So like the call to cancel school sometimes seems a little different than what you would have called both the bad and the good sides of such a call remains an awesome responsibil- ity for someone and you will never please all. We still have great plans for our work day at the church this coming Wednesday start- ing at 9:30 a m. I hope we can get a good start on cleaning up our basement so it can be used again. There are several projects we have in mind so if you have some extra time on your hands, know that you are wel- come to help. One good thing about not having servic- es this week is that next Sunday's sermon is already available and another week of prep- aration if needed. I'll not say much about it here but I will say that it concerns being an ambassador for Jesus. RIVER OF LIFE 342 E. CR 300 N. This is a famous and well known Proverb of the Bi- ble. It gives us the spiritu- al guide to follow as we live. The Proverb which is truth, seems easy to say or quote to someone else who is going through a difficult time. The old common say- ing "easy for you to say." Seems to come up to some- one who is going through something. The truth of the matter is that God's sov- ereignty is never in ques- tion He is all knowing. We HAVE TO TRUST His word. BETHEL G.B.
