Poplar Street, Petersburg NEWS BRIEFS Ash Wednesday service tonight at Winslow Christian Church The Winslow Christian Church will host a communi- ty Ash Wednesday service at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Febru- ary 14. The church is located at the corner of Lafayette and Walnut Sts. in Winslow. Ash Wednesday, which begins the season of Lent, is observed by Christians of many denominations. "The church cordially invites you to attend this solemn, simple service in anticipa- tion of Easter week to come," said Patty Ann Jones. PC Post Prom Committee seeking donations The Pike Central 2018 Post Prom Committee is seeking donations for the Post Prom activities on April 28. This event is provided at no cost to students and provides an atmosphere free from alcohol and drugs. It's sponsored by Junior Class parents, with help from generous individuals, businesses and organizations. Donations can be in the form of monetary gifts or gift cards (ex. gas cards, restaurant). If you would like to donate, contact Janet Church at 812-779 -9284 or Kar- la Hill at 812-664-8696. Red Cross certification class is Feb. 17 The Red Cross will host a class for Pike County res- idents from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Feb. 17 at Patoka Station 51, located at Arthur Junction. This class will provide all the information and certifi- cation you need to become a member of the Red Cross. The class is free but reserving your spot is required. To RSVP, text 812-582-9315. Blue Jeans Center will host Sunday dinner The Blue Jeans Community Center in Monroe City will host Sunday dinner, February 18 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The menu will include: Hot chicken salad, spaghet- ti, Italian green beans, broccoli with cheese, tossed salad, garlic bread and desserts. Carry-outs available. All proceeds benefit the center. Free Community Dinner Feb. 25 There will be a free community dinner on Sunday, February 25, provided by Petersburg German Amer- ican employees. Dessert will also be available. It will be at The Gathering Place, 207 E. Lafayette St., Win- slow, from 5 -6:15 p.m. For more information, call (812) 582-2562. Internet Safety and Security Class Feb. 27 Due to several requests, the Petersburg Police De- partment will be holding a Internet Safety and Aware- ness Class at 7 p.m. of Feb. 27 at Pike Central High School. The class will help educate the public about dangers with children online and offers options to help parents protect their children. Food Science Fun! 18 USC 707 Five machining students placed in regional competition Five Pike Central High School precision machining students placed in the SkillsUSA regional competi- tion held at Vincennes University on Saturday, Feb. 3. In the area of Precision Machining, Nathan Wehr placed first and received a $2,500 scholarship to Vincennes University; Carson Hoffman placed second and received a $1,000 scholarship to Vincennes University; Jade Jochem placed fourth and received a $500 scholarship to Vincennes University; and Chris Seaton placed fifth and received a $500 scholar- ship to Vincennes University. In the area of CNC Milling, Matthew Dick placed second and received a $1,000 scholarship to Vincennes University. The students competed against students from the Southern Indiana Career and Technical Center and Princeton High School. Submitted Photo Get ready to take the Polar Plunge on Feb. 24 The fourth annual Polar Plunge is set for Saturday, Feb. 24 at Prides Creek. The event will begin at noon on Prides Creek Beach. On-site regis- tration starts at 10 a.m. Online regis- tration is also available at www.polar- plungein.org. Proceeds from the event go to Spe- cial Olympics. "This is an opportuni- ty for people who care about Special Olympics to make a difference by en- suring we have the necessary funds to continue to grow and serve people with intellectual disabilities in Indi- ana," said Scott Funish, Special Olym- pics Indiana's senior director of devel- opment. "Plus, it's kind of fun to chal- lenge yourself to go outside your com- fort zone and to do something a little crazy, like jumping in a lake in the mid- dle of winter." To participate, individuals must raise a minimum of $75 ($50 with a student ID) for Special Olympics Indiana, with awards presented to top fundraising teams and individuals. Participants can register as individuals or gather friends, family members, co-workers or others and register as a team. The event also will include an indoor "A fter Splash Bash" at the Gospel Cen- ter Activities Building on Illinois St., where additional prizes will be award- ed as participants warm up with com- plimentary food and beverages. There will be giveaways and a live auction. Spectators and guests are welcome throughout and can take part in the A f- ter Splash Bash Festivities for a $5 fee. Girl Scout cookies arrive Sandy McBeth oversees the delivery of 427 cases of Girl Scout cookies on Tuesday to Pike County. McBeth said 12 girls sold their quota of 160 boxes of cookies this year. The girls will be at various loca- tions over the next few weekends selling the cookies.
