Ed Cahill photo PATOKA VALLEY OUTDOORS By Sam Whiteleather "Mom, my bibs aren't stay- ing up," says a rosy-cheeked six-year-old clad in snow bibs, a heavy jacket and a blue monster stocking-cap complete with horns. Re- na bends over and fixes his bibs. "Here, put your scarf on," she calls to the oldest, who has wandered away from the car. Eva beckons the call and runs back. "I don't need a scarf," she protests. "Yes, you do," Rena says and on goes the scarf. Last- ly, the littlest one climbs out of the car and plunges into the snow. "Mom," she says. "I need a Kleenex." If I had a nickel for every time I've heard "I need a Kleenex" this winter, I would be rich beyond measure. Runny noses, sore throats and incessant coughing (both day and night) have ravaged the kid's immune systems for what seems like four weeks straight. When the cold bugs make a coordinated strike and all three kids are sick at the same time, we can easily go through a box of Kleenex a day. "Come on, let's go," I call to the kids. We start mov- ing away from the car and toward the trail. The after- noon sun shines bright off the fresh three inches of snow we received the day be- fore. It doesn't take long for the kids to get out ahead of Rena and I. They are a con- stant blur of motion, knock- ing into each other before falling into the snow over and over again. "Let's make snow an- gels," Eva shouts, and soon all three are on their backs, arms and legs squirming in the snow. We make slow progress down the trail, three snow angels made for every 10 yards of trail gained.
