By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Junior Tyanna Graber scored a game-high 21 points to lead Loogootee to a 50 -29 victory over visiting Pike Central in high school girls' basketball action on Tuesday, Jan. 9. Graber, who also grabbed a game-high seven re- bounds to go along with a game-high six steals, scored 10 of her points in the first quarter as the La- dy Lions – ranked No. 6 in Class 1A – roared to a 19 - 0 lead. Pike Central, which missed eight field goal at- tempts while turning the ball over three times on its first 10 possessions, finally got on the scoreboard when senior Demi Croak hit a jump shot with 1:09 left in the opening period. Loogootee, which im- proved to 15 -1 with its 13th straight victory, would score the first six points of the second period – on bas- kets by Graber, senior Ju- lianne Bell and freshman Brooklynn Jones – to ex- tend its lead to 25 -2 with 3:21 left in the first half. A fter a free throw by senior Erika Hendrixson pulled the Lady Chargers to within 25 -3 with 2:45 re- maining in the second quar- ter, a basket by sophomore Chelsie Sutton stretched Loogootee's lead to 27- 3 with 1:35 left in the first half. Pike Central finished out the second period with a 3- 0 scoring run – on a basket by Hendrixson and a free throw by senior Brook Nal- ley – to close to within 27-6 at the intermission. The Lady Chargers would get no closer than 20 points – at 35 -15 with 3:56 left in the third period and at 40 -20 with 7:34 left in the fourth quarter – during the second half. "I don't know if we thought we were better than we are or what, but we came out flat, mentally and physically," said Pike Central head coach Kyle McCutchan, whose team slipped to 8 -8 overall with its third consecutive defeat. "Loogootee came out con- fident. They've had a fan- tastic start to their season. They're confident, they're aggressive, and they beat us any which way you can get beat on a given night." "They wanted it more," McCutchan added. "They beat us in every facet that they could beat us – they out-rebounded us, they outshot us, and they out - worked us. That's a combi- nation that's never going to be successful." Hendrixson paced Pike Central with nine points. She also led the Lady Char- gers with six rebounds and three steals. Croak added seven points while junior Hailey Marchino and soph- omore Lauren Vaughn net- ted four points each. Rounding out the scoring for Pike Central were senior Natalie Burkhart (3 points), junior Becca Crow (1 point) and Nalley (1 point). For the game, the Lady Chargers made 12 out of 38 field goal attempts – a 31.6 percent – and hit three of six tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 16 times. Jones added 10 points for Loogootee. Bell tallied seven points while fresh- man Kalea Fleming netted six points and dished out a game-high seven assists. For the game, the Lady Lions made 22 of 39 field goal attempts – a 56.4 per- cent average – and were 3-for-3 from the free throw line while turning the ball over 14 times. "If you come out, ready to play mentally and phys- ically, you're going to com- pete," McCutchan said. "We were not and they just out- worked us from the tip – lit- erally, from the tip – and that's what's disappointing. It's one thing to get beat, but it's another thing just to get beat in every facet of the game. We've got to get back to practice tomorrow and do something about it." In junior varsity action, freshmen Adie Nolley and Makenzie VanHoy scored 10 points each to lead Loo- gootee to a 39 -34 victory over Pike Central. Junior Hannah Carnahan and freshman Mallory Hicko- ry paced the Lady Char- gers with seven points each, while junior Kelsey Barrett pitched in six points. Pike Central was sched- uled to play at North Posey on Saturday, Jan. 13, but, due to in- clement weath- er, the game has been post- poned to Mon- day, Jan. 22. A game at Evans- ville North scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 16, was also postponed, but no make-up date had been set as of press-time. Weather-permitting, the Lady Chargers will re- turn to action on Thursday, Jan. 18, when they will host Princeton. Pike Central is also scheduled to host Barr-Reeve in a varsity-only match-up on Saturday, Jan. 20, and Tecumseh on Tues- day, Jan. 23.
